“The Boat Race will involve teams of up to five students building a boat out of cardboard and duct tape over a two-hour period. All materials are provided.

“The challenge is to make a boat that will carry two team members the 50-metre length of the pool as fast as possible. Students have been encouraged to plan and build prototypes before the event.

“Cardboard material for the boats will be re-used, locally-sourced boxes, which have been donated by Butterfield and Vallis.”

Duncan Simons, organizer and a member of the IBA Council, says: “It is important that we make our professions known to the current generation of students. As a student or teacher, knowing that there are professional groups an email or phone call away can be very useful when trying to make decisions about careers, internships, or work study placements.

“There is nothing like learning by doing. Collaborating as a group, under time pressure, while staying focused on the design challenge engages students in skills we as professionals use routinely. It is very much a sink or swim challenge, and it is our hope that some of these students consider a career in our professions over the coming years.”
