The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is giving community members, supporters and friends another opportunity to detonate one of the Museum’s historic cannon by making a donation to ‘Donate to Detonate.’

A spokesperson said, “This online fundraiser, first launched last year, supports NMB’s annual fund, The Anchor Fund, which sustains and enriches the Museum’s education programmes; exhibits; publications; community outreach; day-to-day operations; and the care of its 16-acre property and collection of 80,000 objects related to 500 years of Bermuda history.

“Supporters can donate any amount through the NMB website, starting at $20, or buy a detonation outright at $1,000. Every fifteenth donation to ‘Donate to Detonate’ under $1,000 will entitle the donor to fire a cannon at the Museum’s Community Day, scheduled for February 25, 2024. Donors who buy a $1,000 detonation outright have an option to pick a private day to fire their cannon, or to join the Community Day in February.

Katie Bennett, NMB Advancement Director said: “By donating to detonate, you are helping fund all we do, including continuing to offer free admission year-round to all local students, educators and children under 16. Thank you, and let’s have a blast together!”

“NMB is a collective voice for and about Bermuda. The Museum offers insights into contemporary issues through exhibits, programmes and collections and is one of the Island’s leading educational resources sharing Bermuda’s diverse history, culture, and heritage. NMB promotes history and culture as part of what helps to keep communities together and makes them stronger.

NMB Executive Director Elena Strong shared: “At NMB, we aim to make learning Bermuda history part of every educational journey on Island. With our programmes that support students, teachers and lifelong learners, exhibits, publications and outreach we are shifting how history is being shared and taught in Bermuda. We frame Bermuda history in an Atlantic World lens, which allows us to understand how Bermuda has positioned itself in the past, in the present, and how it will do so in the future. Donations support this essential work.”
