Women’s Football: Bermuda At Top Of Group
The Bermuda women’s national team will head into the final fixture window of the Concacaf W Gold Cup qualifiers next month top of their group after defeating Barbados 4-2 at the Dame Flora Duffy Stadium last night [October 31].
Bermuda face Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on December 1 before taking on the Dominican Republic, second in group C League B, away on December 5.
The winner of the group will advance to a play-off where they will meet one of the second-place teams from League A, with the victors advancing to the inaugural W Gold Cup in the United States from February 20 to March 10.
The Concacaf match report said, “Bermuda won 4-2 against Barbados at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire Parish, Bermuda.
“Jaden Masters opened the scoring for Bermuda in the 6’ by stripping a defender and hitting a left-footed shot past Kamilla Burke. Victoria Davis added a second in the 10’ with a spectacular conversion on a long-range free kick.
“Aaliyah Nolan then added a third for the hosts in the 12’ by taking on the defence and powering through with a right-footed rocket in the box for a 3-0 Bermuda lead.
“Ashanee Thompson of Barbados cut the deficit in the 34’ by using a short corner to score from outside the box and put a curve ball to the far post.
“Thompson took another one back for the visitors in the 45+5’ after a throw-in quickly developed into danger inside the penalty area and a quick hit from the forward who converted her brace.
“A second yellow card for Khyla Brangman in the 47’ resulted in Bermuda going down to 10 players early in the second half.
“But with their one-goal advantage, Bermuda kept Barbados at bay and Nolan extended the lead in the 74’ to 4-2 after connecting with a Masters pass that went behind the defence. Nolan was injured on the play and was subbed off after completing her brace.
“Rianna Cyrus attempted to cut the deficit back to one in the 79’ but her shot inside the area went just over the goal, followed by second-half substitutes Felicia Jarvis and Makela Alleyne combining in the 90+3’ to try to force a dramatic finish, but Bermuda GK Zakhari Turner was there for the stop on a night in which she had five saves.”
