Saundre “Dash” Simmons ruthlessly knocked out Tre Baker inside two rounds as the Bermudian cruiserweight made an impressive start to his professional boxing career in Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend.
The 26-year-old started the contest aggressively, dominating Baker [0-2-0] with a display of strength and power, flooring the Louisianan early in the second stanza with a thudding body shot and spiteful right hand to the head.
Simmons said he was relieved to finally make his pro debut after suffering several cancelled bouts in the past six months.
He was due to face Calvin Early in Johnson City, Tennessee, last month; however, the American withdrew at the eleventh hour.
“He [Baker] was a tough opponent, took some big shots, and didn’t cave,” Simmons told Bernews.
“I was happy I got to showcase a bit of my skill. I wasn’t nervous at all – I’ve been on big stages in the amateurs.
“I’m ready to go now. I want to be 8-0 by the end of next year. It’s about lining them up and knocking them down. I want to keep the fights coming.
“I want to be ranked [in the top 25 nationally] by the end of the next year – that’s the aim.”
Simmons said he hopes to return to the island to showcase his skills on a local fight card in the near future.
“Fighting in Bermuda has always been the goal,” said Simmons, who is trained by Enoc Solano.
“Nathan Dill [the Bermuda Boxing Federation president] has reached out in the past, but it didn’t work out because of where I was at that time. I’d love to come home and show people what I can do.”
Born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, Simmons was raised by his Bermudian parents in Somerset before moving to Asheville, North Carolina, with his mother when he was 12.
He enjoyed a successful amateur career, placing runner-up at the USA National Boxing Championships in Louisiana and the Golden Gloves of America in Oklahoma in 2021.
