Sakari Famous showed she is back to her best after breaking her national indoor record in the high jump at the McNeese State Indoor Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Friday [January 26].
The Bermudian, who also broke her school record, cleared the mark at 1.81 metres to win her event and beat her previous indoor best of 1.80.
It was Famous’ third straight victory since returning to action after missing the outdoor season last year because of a back injury.
The McNeese State University athlete also claimed victory in the LSU Purple Tiger in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, earlier this month.
Before suffering a stress fracture in February last year, Famous won six straight indoor meets.
Her main goal this season is to reach the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts, from March 8 to 9.
Famous, 23, told Bernews this month: “This school [McNeese] has always given me an environment I feel supported to flourish and strive to be great.
“I will strive to jump whatever height will get me in the top 16, which will take me to the NCAA Championships.”
Famous represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the summer of 2022.
