Sean Trott is confident of improving upon his tenth-place finish in the BF&M 10K last year when he takes to the start line tomorrow [January 13].

Trott will be running competitively for the first time since representing Bermuda at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey in July, where he ran his season-best time in the men’s half-marathon [1hr 12min 40sec].

He said he has enjoyed a more structured training approach for the 10k this year and hopes to better his previous time of 36:17.

“I didn’t want to fall prey into getting back into races too soon [after the Island Games], so I did a standard build-up over the fall,” Trott told Bernews. “I’ve put in about four months of steady training and increasing the miles.

“I’m not really targeting this race in particular; I’m just getting ready to start tackling some local racing.”

The 34-year-old has been a consistent top-ten finisher in the 10k and hopes to dip under 34 minutes.

His personal best is 32:50, and his BF&M 10K course best is 33:40.

“I haven’t won any of the [Race Weekend] races, but I’ve been consistently in the top ten,” he said.

“I’ve had a better build-up this season, and hopefully that’s reflected in my performance.

“The 10k is a bit shorter distance than I would like, although I do drop down to 5k.”

Trott said he is looking forward to the local road running season and building upon his impressive showings last year when he won the RenaissanceRe Ten-Mile Challenge, the Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K, and the PHC One Mile Road Race.

He also came second in the Bermuda Day Half Marathon in 1:16:20.

“My main aim is May 24 – everything is building towards that,” he added. “After May 24, this is the biggest one, though. Seeing all the people lining the course is very motivating.

“I’ll be looking to do the Swan’s Running Club Legends Series and the Lindo’s to Lindo’s, good races to check out your fitness as you progress.

“I also have my eye on a marathon on the East Coast [of the United States] in the fall.”
