Bunker Fire & Equipment Issue At Tynes Bay

February 9, 2024 | 4 Comments

The Tynes Bay facility had to ‘halt waste reception from commercial operators temporarily’ — the public drop-off service to the general public remains open — due to a bunker fire and technical issue.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works wishes to inform the public of an incident at the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy facility in Devonshire today.

“A bunker fire was detected in the early hours, a situation that, while not uncommon, required immediate attention.

“We assure the public that the fire is currently under control, and the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service was promptly called to the scene as a precautionary measure.

“In addition to the fire, we encountered a technical issue where the wire rope of a supporting crane, used for waste incineration, snapped, leaving the grab unit inoperable within the bunker.

“Our teams are currently engaged in an operation to address the issue. The grab unit has been retrieved from the bunker, and the crane is back in operation.

“The fire is still smouldering and will require continued remediation, which can only occur effectively once the crane is fully operational.

“Consequently, the Tynes Bay facility has had to halt waste reception from commercial operators temporarily. It is expected that the collection of commercial waste will resume by tomorrow morning.

“The public drop-off service to the general public remains open and is not affected by this temporary closure for commercial vehicles.

“The Ministry appreciates stakeholders’ understanding and cooperation as we work diligently to resolve this issue and resume normal operations as soon as possible.”

  1. Micro says:

This is most definitely not a common occurrence. Waste in the dump skiff should not “commonly” be on fire. The only fire should be within the incinerator unit.

More trash talk from the Ministry of Public Jerks.
