Free Movie Screening Of ‘Just Mercy’
The U.S. Consulate General and Bermuda National Library will host free movie screening of ‘Just Mercy’ on Wednesday [Feb 7].
A spokesperson said, “Join the U.S. Consulate General and Bermuda National Library to celebrate Black History Month with a free movie screening of “Just Mercy,” a story of justice and redemption based on a memoir by American Attorney Bryan Stevenson on Wednesday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the National Library on Queen Street in Hamilton.
“The film explores a history-making battle for justice which launched Stevenson’s career in defending disadvantaged clients. In the film, Michael B. Jordan plays attorney Stevenson, who travels to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper legal representation. With the help of a local advocate, Stevenson helps Walter McMillian, played by Jamie Foxx, who had been wrongfully convicted of murder.
“Just Mercy is a powerful, true story centered around empathy, equity, hope and resilience,” says U.S. Consul General Karen Grissette. “Both the film and New York Times bestseller by Bryan Stevenson have received numerous, prestigious awards, and more importantly, have helped people better understand racial justice issues within the judicial system. I am proud to partner again with the Bermuda National Library to host this special movie screening in honor Black History Month.”
“Bryan Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative – a human rights organization in Montgomery, Alabama. He has won major legal challenges and has received numerous awards including the 2023 National Humanities Medal presented by President Joseph Biden.
“Space for the moving screening is limited. Guests are encouraged to register directly with the library to reserve a seat.”
