Somersfield Academy will be hosting their Personal Project Expo — where M5 students will showcase their diverse and innovative projects — on February 29th.

A spokesperson said, “Somersfield Academy is thrilled to announce its upcoming Personal Project Expo, where M5 students will showcase their diverse and innovative projects on February 29th. This event promises to be a celebration of creativity, research, and personal growth, highlighting the incredible talents and dedication of our students.

“As the only school in Bermuda to offer the International Baccalaureate [IB] Middle Years Programme [MYP], Somersfield Academy places a strong emphasis on inquiry-based learning and the development of essential skills. The MYP Personal Project is a flagship of the programme, challenging students to engage in independent inquiry and produce a significant piece of work that reflects their interests and abilities.”

“We are immensely proud of our M5 students and the remarkable projects they have undertaken for their Personal Project,” said Carolyn Amaral, MYP Personal Project Coordinator at Somersfield Academy. “This Expo is a culmination of their hard work and dedication, and it’s inspiring to see how they have applied their learning to real-world challenges.”

The spokesperson said, “The Personal Project Expo will feature a wide range of projects, including:

  • Taylor Herzog’s combination of environmental awareness with mechanical innovation, creating a machine that turns plastic bottles into 3D printer filament, which can be used to then create 3D printed objects.
  • Andy Hendel’s creation of an original comic titled “Rocket’s Cosmic Odyssey” that follows the story of a humanoid dog in a sci-fi world. Created from scratch this series can be found on Webtoons.
  • Samantha Osborne’s development of an informative dance website which includes choreographed pieces and instructional videos designed to inspire other teenage dancers to embark their own exploration of dance.
  • Nico Bean’s exploration of creating notebooks and phone cases from original artwork and developing a business website to sell his products.
  • Marc Rajeh’s investigation of the economic impact of cocoa on countries that produce it on a large scale and the creation of his own dark chocolate at home from cocoa beans.
  • Grace Lightowler’s creation of four paintings that represent the mental health impact of sports and research into symptoms and treatment for mental health issues.
  • Annie Pursell’s exploration of guitar and the creation of an original folk song.

“Our students have truly embraced the spirit of inquiry and innovation through their Personal Projects,” said Charlie Judd, Head of Secondary. “Their dedication to exploring their passions and making meaningful contributions is a testament to the values we strive to instil in our students.”

The spokesperson said, “The Expo will provide an opportunity for students to share their projects with the school community, as well as parents, mentors, and invited guests. Attendees will have the chance to engage with the projects, learn from the students’ experiences, and celebrate their achievements.

“The Personal Project Expo exemplifies Somersfield Academy’s commitment to providing a holistic education that nurtures students’ curiosity, creativity, and sense of responsibility to the world around them.”
