BHS Students Celebrate Round Square Day
Students from Bermuda High School joined in the worldwide observance of Round Square Day, engaging in the festivities alongside 250 schools spanning across 50 countries.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda High School students spent yesterday celebrating Round Square Day. The only school on the island accredited as a Round Square school, BHS was part of a global celebration among 250 schools in 50 countries.
“The day was filled with activities, celebrating the Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service. This year, the IDEALS were celebrated through various activities centering on the theme of “A Bermudian Renaissance.”
“Historically, celebrations have remained within the Secondary Department; however, this year, we were elated to extend our celebrations to include our Primary students. In the Primary Department, the girls came to school wearing the colours of their favourite Round Square Discovery Heroes. Our youngest EYP students created capes and crowns representative of their favourite heroes and paraded through the department. This was followed by Bermuda-themed crafts and songs and decorating the campus with locally inspired chalk drawings.
“Secondary students spent their morning exploring the diversity and themes that make Bermuda unique, with a panel discussion featuring alumni Amy Harvey ‘94, Raven Baksh ‘10, Phoebe Barboza ‘14, and William Campbell ‘16, alongside Danielle Paynter and Cordell W. Riley, followed by Baraza groups led by our Year 12 and 13 students. A wide range of activities kept everyone entertained in the afternoon, including kite building, cooking, arts & crafts, locally themed drama projects, and a “mini Cupmatch”. A lunchtime marketplace also provided the opportunity for students to enjoy local treats such as Ashley’s Lemonade, glass candy, Johnny bread, snow cones and more. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit the BHS Adventure Fund, which supports students in attending school trips and activities.”
Of the annual celebrations, Head of School Carol Swainson remarked, “Today’s Round Square Day will help us to be ‘glocal’, meaning think globally; act locally. After all, Bermuda is impacted by the world stage via its businesses and geographical location. Learning about ourselves will help us to engage with the wider world.”
The spokesperson said, “As part of the Round Square network, students from BHS have the unique opportunity to participate in various Round Square conferences, service trips and exchanges. In the last year, students have travelled to Namibia, Kenya, New Zealand, Atlanta, Japan, Peru, South Africa and Germany. BHS also serves as a host school for foreign exchange students within the Round Square network.”
