Soldiers from the Royal Bermuda Regiment recently shared their expertise in teaching public order techniques with police, prisons and defence personnel from six Caribbean countries.

A spokesperson said, “Ten people from Regional Security System member states were selected for the train-the-trainer course in Barbados so that they, in turn, can pass on the knowledge and skills to colleagues, and harmonise practices across the RSS network.

“Two RBR soldiers travelled last month to the Caribbean island, where they first delivered revision lessons to participants – all of whom were students in a public order course run by Regiment instructors last year.

“Included in the group were members of organisations based in Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, St Kitts & Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines, and St Lucia.

“Participants also worked on instructional techniques and lesson preparation, before being assigned roles and responsibilities they would take on in the delivery of a basic public order course to 21 students from across eight RSS partner nations.

“While the developing instructors conducted the course – which included training in containment and crowd dispersal – the RBR team continued to coach and mentor them throughout.”

Colour Sergeant Sergio White, a member of the Royal Bermuda Regiment training team, highlighted the importance of delivering concise lessons and added, “The points to get across are for the students to think about safety first, to trust in their equipment, and to look out for the individuals around them.”

The spokesperson said, “The 39-year-old gym owner from Warwick was “very impressed” with how the group performed.”

CSgt White said, “The ten that we picked definitely rose to the level of good instructors.

“They were getting their points across, looking more and more confident in what they were teaching and doing.”

The spokesperson said, “The RSS was first formed more than 40 years ago out of a need for a collective response to security threats.

“It aims to ensure the stability and wellbeing of member states, to help maximise regional security for the preservation of social and economic development.

“Senior Sergeant Alvin Titus, of the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda, participated in the public order training last year and said he was happy to return in February 2024 to pick up new skills and deliver the course to the next cohort.

“He noted the value of aligning procedures across RSS member states.”

Senior Sergeant Titus said, “It’s very important that we have the same standard, that we are all on the same page in terms of how we deliver public service to the citizens of our countries.”

The spokesperson said, “He added that the plan was for instructors to take what they learned in Barbados to their various islands and impart the skills throughout defence and law enforcement organisations.”

Senior Sergeant Titus hoped members of the public would be aware, “We’re not there to cause any harm, we’re just there to provide safety and protection to all, including ourselves.”

The spokesperson said, “Andrel Valcin, an operations manager at the Bordelais Correctional Facility in St Lucia, was a student on the basic public order course last month and described the training as “very intense”, adding that the instructors did “a very good job”.

She explained: “What we were taught was how to effectively contain a public order situation.

“In that, we learned different techniques such as how to manoeuvre, how to move, how to do different formations.

“My key takeaway was that to do all of that, we need to work as a team.”
