The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] announced the opening of a new exhibit entitled, ‘Majestic Migrations: A Look into The Humpback Whales of Bermuda’, located in the Ocean Discovery Centre at BUEI.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is excited to announce the opening of a new exhibit entitled, ‘Majestic Migrations: A Look into The Humpback Whales of Bermuda’, located in the Ocean Discovery Centre at BUEI. Opening to the public on Thursday, 28 March 2024, Majestic Migrations features aerial footage of North Atlantic Humpback Whales, [Megaptera novaeangliae] captured by local researcher and photographer, Andrew Stevenson.

“To celebrate the exhibit opening, BUEI will host a special BUEI Talk with Andrew Stevenson on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:30pm.

“Majestic Migrations is a multimedia exhibit highlighting three separate encounters with seven humpback whales, one female, one primary male escort, and five other male humpbacks, as they navigate the shallow waters of Bermuda’s South Shore.

“Since 2006, Andrew has identified over two thousand individual humpbacks in Bermuda’s waters alone. Many of the identified whales have been recorded in Bermuda’s waters over multiple years, indicating consistency to a migratory route. These whales have been observed as far north as Franz Josef Land in Russia, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, Labrador and eastern Canada and the United States and as far south as North Carolina and the Caribbean breeding/calving grounds.

“His research on humpback whales began nearly two decades ago. After he and his daughter Elsa spotted a whale breaching off Grape Bay, she asked him why the whale had jumped out of the water. This simple question sparked his ongoing passion for humpback whales.

“Andrew would go on to produce his first feature-length documentary ‘Where the Whales Sing’ in 2010. The film, narrated by his then six-year-old daughter Elsa, won the Charman Prize at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in 2010, and Best Emerging Underwater Filmmaker at the Blue Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit in California. His second documentary ‘The Secret Lives of the Humpbacks’, was released in 2019. Having co-authored several scientific papers, Andrew is today a leading expert in the field, lecturing globally on the behavior of humpbacks in Bermuda’s waters.

“During his informative talk on March 26, Andrew will present his latest research on humpback whales in Bermuda and display aerial footage of never-before-seen behaviors of humpback whales. The lecture will take place in our Tradewinds Auditorium [wheelchair accessible] and includes an audience Q&A.

“Tickets for BUEI Talks are $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students with a valid ID. A private viewing and opening reception for BUEI members attending the presentation will be held at 6.30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
