The 29th Bodhidharma Shiai, held at the Whitney Institute, showcased thrilling karate action and witnessed remarkable performances from athletes of all ages and skill levels.
A spokesperson said, “Talia Iris, representing the Bodhidharma Zenji-Ryu Karate Dojo, stole the show by claiming victory in the Black Belt Kata Combine. Her flawless execution of the Anan kata, a top-tier kata in the WKF Premier 1 League, earned her high praise and the admiration of spectators.
“But the excitement didn’t stop there. Jaishun Jones of Harto-Ryu Dojo delivered a breakout performance in the Under 10 Novice Kata Division, displaying focus and vigor to emerge victorious in a fiercely competitive field.
“In the Teen Boys Kumite Division, Michael Burgess of Shorikan Dojo showcased his skills, defeating newcomer Tre Simons in a thrilling final bout. Meanwhile, in the Under 10 Boys Kumite, Noah Lowe and Chan Simmons engaged in an intense battle, with Simmons narrowly edging out Lowe by a single point in his debut kumite match.
“Edmond Johnson, Director of Shotocup and Secretary of the Bermuda Karate Federation, expressed his satisfaction with the high level of focus and determination demonstrated by all participants throughout the event.
“Gladwin Roots Phillips, Tournament Director and Chief Instructor of Bodhidharma Zenji-Ryu Karate Dojo, emphasized the importance of events like the Bodhidharma Shiai in the development of young karateka in Bermuda. He encouraged instructors to sign up their students, highlighting the significant benefits they stand to gain from participating.
“Special recognition goes to Ja’Quito Young, who secured gold in his debut event, showcasing the talent nurtured through the BKFA Kickstart Program.
“The 29th Bodhidharma Shiai was a testament to the talent, dedication, and spirit of Bermuda’s martial arts community, inspiring both participants and spectators alike.
