A group of individuals gathered at the Ottiwell Simmons Building to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the 1st meeting of the Progressive Group, engaging in discussions on lifelong learning and collaboration in Bermuda.

A spokesperson said, “Just over a month ago, on Feb 8th, a diverse group of folks – some 60 of us, including 6 – senior students, unionists, activists, executives, charity reps and others – engaged in an Interactive Gathering at the BIU. The venues new name – Ottiwell Simmons Building is quite appropriate for the occasion, since the late icon was an exemplar of life-long- learning and the overall theme for the Gathering was “Always Learning” .

“The date marked the 65th Anniversary of the 1st meeting of the Progressive Group; so the Opening of the event involved the recognition of three members of that iconic secret body – Isola Harvey, Florence Maxwell & Erskine Simmons. They were present in symbolic representation of the full dozen – many of whom have passed – on that date in 1959 at the home of Rosalind & Eduord Williams in Town Hill, Flatts.

“Following the ceremonial Opening the Gathering took a look at a Timeline which provided an overview of the Journey of Bermuda, from Emancipation; including such milestones as the establishment of Elliot School, then Berkeley Institute, the formation of the BUT and the Women’s Suffrage movement, then the Bermuda Workers association and down through to the Boycott.

“Following that overview, we broke out into 6 groups – with most groups including one of the 6 students present- and explored two questions. [a] What ‘culture’ nurtures learning in any circumstance? [b] How can we promote collaboration across the Island?

“The link below provides a Summary of the Outcomes from discussions in the groups. Click https://tinyurl.com/4mnftur3 for the Google doc that captures it all.

‘Going forward, we plan over 2024 to highlight significant legacy markers that have promoted an Opening of Bermuda – opening hearts & opening minds.”
