BPS Attends Women In Police Conference
Deputy Commissioner of Police Na’imah Astwood represented the Bermuda Police Service at the International Association of Women in Police Conference in the Cayman Islands.
A police spokesperson said, “This week, Na’imah Astwood, Deputy Commissioner of Police, was part of a delegation representing the Bermuda Police Service at the International Association of Women in Police [IAWP] Conference.
“This year, the meeting is being held in the Cayman Islands, where the IAWP has partnered with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office [FCDO] to host the Caribbean Region 26th Gender-Responsive Policing Conference.
“The gathering is for women police officers and civilian police staff from across the region. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Empowered Women, Empower Women.’
“Accompanying the Deputy Commissioner are sister officers, Acting Detective Chief Inspector, Derricka Burns, Detective Sergeant, Joanne Raposo and Sergeant, Crystal Correia.
“Civilian staff members, Mrs. Wanda Bluefort, the BPS Finance Manager and Mrs. Isis Wellman, the BPS Occupational Health Unit Director and Welfare Officer, are also attending.
“Mrs. Bluefort was presented with the Staff Member Award, in recognition of her outstanding effort to support, promote, improve and enhance policing.”
Deputy Commissioner Astwood, who was also included on a conference panel established to discuss coaching and mentoring of female officers, said, “This event, has over the years, continued to positively impact the development of women police officers as well as women support staff, whose work is invaluable to the proper functioning of the all region’s law enforcement agencies.
“It has been personally gratifying to see our female officers and police support staff be exposed to this experience which affords them the opportunity to forge relationships with their counterparts from among the various Caribbean countries with whom we have so much in common.”
