Bermuda’s Seri Fisher won silver medals in both traditional Kata and staff weapons at the North American Open Championships in Las Vegas.
A spokesperson said, “With over 2000 competitors from 21 countries the North American Open Championships held in Las Vegas produced fierce competition. Bermuda’s sole entry Seri Fisher won two silver medals one in traditional Kata and one in weapons using a staff.
“Bermuda would sit atop the per capita medal table with one athlete and 2 medals, during this three day event.
“With a huge number of competitors 10 rings were used simultaneously and two karateka performing at the same time in each ring for most competition.
“This championship was a qualifier for both the 2024 WUKF World Championships in Mexico, and the AAU Championships in Florida. Medal winners have qualified if applicable.
“During traditional kata Seri won her first and second rounds with 3-0 victories over girls from the USA
Seri then lost her first ever match, when up against an older Japanese/American girl holding a higher ranking, this top ranked girl rightfully went on to win gold.
“Seri proceeded to the silver / bronze round against an Irish athlete who provided tough resistance, in a close encounter Seri emerged with a silver medal winning a split decision 2-1.
“During the kobudo tournament it was admitted that the judges were not in harmony pertaining the correct range of points, after Seri’s performance the judges changed the format which seemingly adversely affected her chance of gold. She was declared 2rd. Regardless Seri was proud to return to Bermuda with a silver metal haul from the Silver State Nevada.
“Thanks must go to Sensei’s Roots Phillips, Talia lris and Darrel of Zenji Ryu for their training.”
