Updates | OBA’s Robert King Wins By-Election
[Updating] The Constituency 10 Smith’s North by-election is being held today [May 22] with the OBA’s Robert King, the PLP’s Lindsay Simmons and Independent Sir John Swan all running for the seat, which was made vacant when former Premier and OBA MP Michael Dunkley resigned from politics.
Since the one seat system started in 2003, the OBA have won Smith’s North three times and the PLP has won it twice. In the 2020 General Election, this was the sole seat in which the OBA significantly increased their vote share, with Mr Dunkley’s winning percentage increasing by around 8%. Generally speaking, in by-elections the final results do not come in any time before 9:00 p.m, and we will update as able this evening.
Update 8.48pm: Count 1 is in [these are not the final results, it is the first part of the votes] the PLP’s Lindsay Simmons has 65, the OBA’s Robert King has 45, and Independent Sir John Swan has 39.
Update 9.01pm: Count 2 is in [these are not the final results, it is the second part of the votes] the PLP’s Lindsay Simmons has 105, the OBA’s Robert King has 101, and Independent Sir John Swan has 93.
Update 9.18pm: Count 3 is in, the OBA’s Robert King has now taken the lead with 162, the PLP’s Lindsay Simmons has 147, and Independent Sir John Swan has 139.
We are awaiting the final count, and we will bring live video from the scene, it can sometimes be a little hectic doing live video at these announcements, so we apologize in advance if our live stream quality is a bit dubious! We have added the video below just so we’re ready; as of 9:23pm is not live…. as soon as they come out to speak we will go live.
Update 9.32pm: Video now live…the OBA’s Robert King has won…he maintains the seat for the OBA.
The OBA’s Robert King got 209 votes [36.41%], Sir John Swan got 184 votes [32.06%] and the PLP’s Lindsay Simmons got 181 votes [31.53%].
Sir John Swan took plp apart.
Wake up plp.
Ouch! 3rd place! If only that would happen in a general election! Get them out!
Don’t get excited, it won’t.
The oba is in BIG trouble with those results. Next election it’s curtains.
