Photos & Video: Cayman Vs Bermuda Rugby
Bermuda hosted the Cayman Islands in an international rugby match at the National Sports Center this weekend, with Bermuda being defeated 44 – 12.
A spokesperson previously said, “These games are part of the Rugby America’s North [RAN] qualification pathway, a competition spread over three years from 2024-2026.
“This weekend’s match-up is especially significant as it will feature the debut of numerous promising talents from the Bermuda squad. These new players are set to earn their first international caps, signaling a fresh and exciting phase for Bermuda rugby.
Its difficult to compete right now, the stakes have been raised. Cayman has huge Government sponsored backing; a clubhouse, Director of Rugby, coaches, travel paid. Bermuda gets nothing because the Government thinks it’s a ‘white sport’.
The irony is through years of Beyond Rugby, entirely funded by the private sector, it is incredibly inclusive and our national team is heavily black. And yet we throw money elsewhere, football particularly which is dogged by mismanagement and poor results.
Our sports minister needs to look at this.
Sadly, perception is what matters. Not the truth.
