Jr Golfers Compete In Optimist Championships
Several of Bermuda’s most promising junior golfers are testing their game at the prestigious Optimist International Junior Golf Championship being held in Miami, Florida over the course of three weeks.
A spokesperson said, “The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship is one of the largest and best-known junior golf tournaments in the world. Each year, more than 600 golfers participate in The Optimist. Optimists have been involved in the sport of junior golf for more than 30 years by holding local, regional and international tournaments. More than 5,000 golfers compete in official Optimist District qualifying tournaments.
:The best of these golfers, along with international golfers from around the globe, advance to the annual Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. Former champions and top finishers of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships include Lexi Thompson, Beth Bauer, Jonathan Byrd, Jason Day, Bill Haas, Brittany Lincicome, Jeff Overton, Stacy Prammanasudh and Jennifer Rosales.
“Last week [July 16 – 21], Lewis MacFarlane turned in an excellent performance in the 10-11 age division as he finished T17 with a three-round total of 246 [78, 85, 83]. In the 12-13 age division, Lachlan Soutter made his debut at this tournament as he finished with a three-round total of 279 [99, 88, 92] to finish 90th. This week [July 23-25], Arman Newton is in action in the 15-17 age division. Newton turned in an 11 over par first round total of 81 on the 6581-yard Blue Monster course which put him 68th on the leaderboard.
“However, he fought back in Round 2 on the 6209-yard Golden Palm course with an impressive 3 over par 75 for a two-round total of 13 over par which saw him climb the leaderboard up to 26th to comfortably make the cut which was at 22 over par. Dylan Muso begins his 3rd appearance at the Optimist Championship as he will be competing in the 16-18 age division. Round 1 will be held at the Blue Monster course off the blue tees [7003 yards] and Round 2 will be played at the Golden Palm [6636 yards]] off the white tees. The top 70 plus ties will make the 36-hole cut which will be played at the Blue Monster course.
