Port Royal Join BTA’s Anchor Training Program
Port Royal Golf Course, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, made time to allow their staff to receive training organized by the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
A spokesperson said, “AnchorBDA is City & Guilds certified and was created by the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] to establish our own industry-recognised designation to empower residents. This designation is a complete suite of certified courses for the hospitality and tourism industry that will:
- Enhance participants’ in-depth knowledge of the industry
- Ensure consistent service standards island wide
- Ensure Bermuda remains competitive in a global market
- Empower specialists with the tools to deliver an exemplary customer service experience
“Mr. Corey Butterfield who is well versed in tourism and local history is teaching the course on site in the Port Royal Boardroom and is doing a good job capturing the attention of the staff.
The wealth of local information provided is resonating with staff in attendance. One staff member commented, “the information is so interesting and is helping me to better understand our island home … I never knew where the name Port Royal came from.”
The spokesperson said, “Strategically, the training coincided with Port Royal Golf Course’s scheduled 3-day closure for mandatory maintenance in preparation for the PGA Tour Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November 14 -17, 2024.”
Kim Swan, Chairman of Government Golf Courses shared, “I’m ecstatic that our management team have taken advantage of this worthwhile and necessary industry training initiative organized by the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
Teamwork:- Pro Shop Supervisor Ms. Judy Scott the longest serving employee at Port Royal, Ms. Ianthia Butler, Trustee [HR Chairwoman] and Ms. Thomasinna Hassell, Director of Finance, Admin & HR
Mr Swan continued, “I was made aware of the value of this program when interviewing Ms Davida O’Brien and Ms. Denae Burchall of the Bermuda Tourism Authority on my radio show Tourism in Focus on Magic 1027FM. Their excitement was infectious, and I knew it would enhance our business but we needed to get our golf course staff to participate. The fact that the course is also City & Guilds certified is a huge bonus for the resumes of participants.
“Ms Thomassina Hassell Director of HR, Admin. & Finance together with Mr. Jayson Jackson [Golf Course Superintendent & Acting Operations Manager] for Government Golf Courses are to be commended for leading their teams towards this great educational opportunity. They collectively undertook to ensure that all our staff have an opportunity to join this fantastic educational initiative, which is sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority.”
Director of Finance, Administration & Human Resources welcomes BTA AnchorBda Training

Our Bermuda hospitality workers are important to our industry but employees armed with information about Bermuda become even better ambassadors.”
