Summer Interns Gain Key Experience At Wilton
Skyah Walker and Charlie Thorpe completed internships at Wilton Re Bermuda Limited, gaining practical experience in actuarial and accounting tasks through the BILTIR program.
A spokesperson said, “Skyah Walker and Charlie Thorpe were selected from a field of nearly two dozen applicants as this year’s summer interns at Wilton Reinsurance Bermuda Limited. Wilton Re has been offering placements for interns for 11 years, and for the last nine years the Company has collaborated with the Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers [BILTIR] for summer internship placements.
“This year, Skyah Walker, pursuing actuarial science at The Bermuda College, and Charlie Thorpe, an undergraduate student in economics and finance at Wilfrid Laurier, Ontario, both joined the Wilton Re team for the duration of the summer.
“The interns supported Wilton Re’s actuarial and accounting professionals by performing a range of tasks related to risk assessment, reserving, and financial analysis. Their responsibilities included the compilation of model output, data and sensitivity analyses, spreadsheet modeling including macro writing, and preparation of reports and presentations. Skyah and Charlie participated in company meetings to gain a better understanding of how actuarial science is applied in a real-world business setting. Throughout the internship, they learned about industry regulations, compliance requirements, and the practical aspects of risk management, while dovetailing with the BILTIR internship programme during weekly lunch and learn sessions.”
Of the internship, Ms Walker said, “I am grateful to Wilton Re for the Actuarial Summer Internship opportunity. This experience has allowed me to gain valuable knowledge and insight about the industry, which I can carry with me as I continue to learn and pursue my goals to become an Actuary.”

Mr Thorpe added, “The smaller office size at Wilton Re has allowed me to see how reinsurance works from top to bottom, and I have been able to understand how the work I am doing benefits the Company.”
Taiyana Allen, a former Wilton Re intern who subsequently joined the Company as an actuarial analyst, said, “I started as an actuarial summer intern with Wilton Re in 2019. I gained industry knowledge, transferable excel/programming and actuarial modelling skills. There were myriad opportunities to connect with other professionals within the company and the broader industry. I believe my internship prepared me to take on my first full-time entry-level role. I encourage students to take full advantage of these defining opportunities.”
Sylvia Oliveira, CEO, remains a passionate advocate for investing in Bermudian students and their migration into the Bermuda reinsurance industry. She said, “The life reinsurance sector is dedicated to Bermuda for the long term, reflecting a strong commitment to contributing to the local community by creating jobs for Bermudians and increasing awareness of opportunities within our industry. Wilton Re is proud to support the development of local students, helping to prepare them for future roles in the reinsurance space.”
The spokesperson said, “Incorporated in 2005, Wilton Re Bermuda [wiltonre.bm] in an A-rated life and annuity reinsurer committed to creating solutions that enhance value for our clients and their policyholders.”
