Jamai Gomes Earns PSEA Award For August
Electrical Engineer Jamai Gomes earned the Public Service Excellence Award [PSEA] for August.
A Government spokesperson said, “Last Friday [Sept. 13] Mr. Jamai Gomes from the Department of Works & Engineering was presented with the Public Service Excellence Award for the month of August. Mr. Gomes, an Electrical Engineer, is recognized for his exceptional service, teamwork and leadership during Hurricane Ernesto.

“In his supervisor’s absence during preparations for the storm on August 17th, Mr. Gomes stepped up and led a small team tasked with protecting the government’s vital water system infrastructure and associated equipment. He executed critical pre-storm shutdowns and was praised by his supervisor for his careful attention to detail.
“He also took proactive measures to review and fuel generators, ensuring uninterrupted emergency power for the government’s water plants and telecommunication towers. After the storm passed, Mr. Gomes promptly returned to assess the plant and equipment for damage, providing timely reports that helped restore key infrastructure and services in record time.
“Mr. Gomes demonstrated both technical expertise and an exceptional ability to collaborate by coordinating with stakeholders and various sections of the Ministry, including the Water Section, the Telecommunication Section, the Government Quarry, the Bermuda Land Development Company [BLDC] and several teams of engineers. His efforts ensured that vital information was communicated clearly and understood by all parties. His role was critical in ensuring uninterrupted emergency response efforts throughout the storm.
Premier David Burt, congratulated Mr. Gomes on his award saying, “Mr. Gomes’ actions during Hurricane Ernesto is a further example of the dedicated officers that Bermuda has in its public service. His devotion and attention to detail ensured that critical services were able to be delivered uninterrupted despite the severity of the storm and the length of time our island was impacted. I thank him for his commitment to the safety and protection of our citizens, our services, and our infrastructure.”
Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter, said, “Mr. Gomes’ actions are a fine example of service excellence. He is clearly a problem-solver who has the ability to make good decisions. His work exemplifies the spirit of public service. On behalf of the Public Service Executive, congratulations to you Mr. Gomes and thank you for your commitment to service excellence.”
