Minister’s National Mammography Day Message
Minister of Health Kim Wilson emphasized the importance of mammograms during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, urging women over 40 to prioritize regular screenings as a vital step in early detection and effective treatment of breast cancer.
Minister Wilson said, “Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month highlights the critical need for early detection, support, and continuous research in the battle against breast cancer. It also serves as a reminder that collectively we can advance care and bring hope to those affected by this disease.
“Breast cancer is a significant global health issue, as the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In Bermuda, it is the primary cancer diagnosed in women. Early detection through regular screenings is critical for improving survival rates and treatment outcomes.
“National Mammography Day, observed on the third Friday of October and first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993, emphasizes the importance of mammograms. Women are encouraged to schedule their mammography appointments on this day or throughout the month.
“I urge all women over 40 to prioritize their annual mammograms. Caring for your breast health is essential for your overall well-being and regular self-checks and screenings, like mammograms, help catch any issues early.
“Why are annual mammograms necessary?
- “They detect breast density, which can indicate higher cancer risk.
- “They can find lumps 2-3 years before they can be felt.
- “They help track changes in breast tissue over time.
“Embracing healthy habits can also help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides essential nutrients that support overall health and strengthen the immune system. Staying active through regular physical exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, which is crucial as obesity has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Limiting alcohol intake is important because alcohol consumption is known to increase breast cancer risk. By incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine, you can significantly lower your risk and promote a healthier, happier life.
“The Ministry of Health will continue to raise awareness and encourage regular screenings to reduce the impact of breast cancer. Please support the fight against breast cancer and spread the message that early detection can save lives.”
Mammograms do more harm than good.
I think there’s many people waiting for your explanation/proof of this claim.
And please don’t switch up to claims that the flu shot kills people either .
