Football Finals: Port Royal, BHS & Warwick Win
The Primary School Football Finals saw Port Royal edge West End 2-1 in Division 2, BHS claim the Girls’ title with a penalty shootout victory, and Warwick Academy dominate Somersfield 8-1 in Division 1.
Primary School Division 2 Final: Port Royal Primary – 2 West End Primary – 1
A spokesperson said, “Port Royal Primary won the Bermuda School Sports Federation Division 2 final with a 2-1 victory over West End Primary in a battle of the western zone schools. Tayz Showers gave Port Royal the lead fifteen minutes into the contest converting a penalty after West End handled the ball in the box. West End equalized ten minutes into the second half when a long range shot from D’Najeo Darrell took a big bounce and found the top of the net over the Port Royal goalkeeper. Just when it seemed the match might head into the dreaded penalty shootout Ashlee Clay Jr. scored the wining goal with a fierce shot that beat the goalkeeper at the near post. Cove Bailey from West End and Christopher Anderson were named MVPs for their respective schools.
Primary School Girls Final: BHS – 2 [won 3-2 penalties] St. George’s Preparatory – 2
“A penalty shoot out was needed to separate Bermuda High School and St. George’s Preparatory in the exciting Primary School Girls Final. It was a tale of two halves with with St. George’s Prep taking a two goal lead into halftime only to see BHS score twice in the second half. Sahalie Outerbridge put the east enders up 1-0 in the opening minute when she got to the end of a Kierra Broadley Samuels cross. Broadley-Samuels turned scorer a few minutes later when she slotted the ball past the BHS goalkeeper after dribbling through the BHS backline to cap of a brilliant solo effort. BHS came storming back in the second half and tied things up after two goals from Myla Cornish. Her second goal was mere minutes before the final whistle when she was first to react to a block save from the St. George’s goalkeeper. Broadley-Samuels was the St. George’s MVP while Cornish’s double earned her MVP for BHS.
Primary School Division 1 Final: Warwick Academy – 8 Somersfield Academy – 1
“Warwick Academy stormed to a 8-1 win over Somersfield Academy in the division 1 final. Warwick scored in the opening few minutes when Eoin Muirhead scored the first of his three goals. Sam Bernardino equalized for Somersfield after keeping his composure to slip the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. It was all Warwick after that when Billy Brogden found the back of the net to restore the Warwick lead. Brogden then squared the ball to Muirhead for his second and Warwick’s third goal of the first half. Nick Luber would score Warwick’s fourth with a long range effort to give Warwick a comfortable 4-1 halftime lead. Shammaah Darko scored Warwick’s next two goals. His first goal was a solid strike which went in off the post. His second found the roof of the net after the was fastest to react to a goalmouth scramble. Muirhead completed his hat trick with a shot from the edge of the box. Luber scored his second with an exquisite 25 yard freekick which found the top right corner of the Somersfield goal. Muirhead was named MVP for Warwick while Leo Highland was named MVP for Somersfield Academy.
