GIS Platform Launched For Climate Change

December 17, 2024 | 26 Comments

The Government of Bermuda has launched a Geographic Information System [GIS] designed to enhance understanding and inform action based on the findings of the recently published Climate Change and Its Impact on Bermuda Study.

A spokesperson said, “The public will recall that this landmark study, released on November 27, highlights the pressing challenges and opportunities associated with the future impacts of climate change on the island.”

“The GIS platform provides an interactive and accessible tool for visualizing the various data layers that were created for the commissioning of the climate change study, including:

  • Projected sea-level rise and its impact on Bermuda’s coastline and infrastructure.
  • Vulnerability assessments for communities, ecosystems, and key industries.
  • Climate adaptation measures and priority areas for intervention.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Walter Roban, emphasized the importance of this initiative, “Bermuda is at the forefront of addressing climate change in a meaningful way. This GIS platform not only complements the findings of our climate change study but also empowers residents, businesses, and policymakers with the tools they need to make informed decisions. Our goal is to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”

The Government spokesperson said, “The GIS platform is available online at gov.bm/climatechange, fostering transparency and community engagement. Its user-friendly design allows residents to explore climate scenarios to help them understand the implications for various sectors, including tourism, fisheries, and real estate.

“This system underscores the Government’s commitment to using science and technology to address Bermuda’s urgent climate challenges. By leveraging the power of GIS, Bermuda is equipped to build resilience and strengthen its leadership role in global climate adaptation efforts.

“The public is encouraged to visit gov.bm/climatechange to review the reports and explore the GIS system to gain an understanding of the potential impact climate change will have on Bermuda.”

If only someone in government could define “climate change.” Wait. Our Government can save the planet from climate change by purchasing 70 electric buses and 13 electric cars for our ministers. But the Big Guy is still chauffeured around in an evil internal combustion engine vehicle made by BMW.

    Is the sea level rising?
    - Bermuda has only one NOAA station measuring sea level that has not been certified for years. If my memory serves me correctly, the last time it was certified, the Margin of Error was at least +/- 17%. Would that Margin of Error increase or decrease over time with storms and hurricanes? (trick question)

    - NOAA’s 2017 5-year sea level prediction report was so bad that the 2022 5-year report LOWERED Florida’s 2030 high sea level rise estimate by 46.1%. LOWERED BY 46.1%!!! The reason for the difference, as stated by NOAA, is that the data is now “better.”

    - The Vanishing Islands that Failed to Vanish, NY Times, June 26, 2024. In a stunning twist of fate, nearly 1,000 low-lying tropical islands once considered doomed are now GROWING IN SIZE, defying dire predictions of their demise. “Researchers stunned after analyzing nearly 1,000 ‘vanishing’ islands: ‘I’m not sure we really knew what we would find’” “Yet when researchers analyzed decades of aerial photos and satellite imagery, they discovered an amazing trend: MOST ISLANDS HAVE REMAINED STABLE OR EVEN INCREASED IN AREA.”

    - After gravity, tectonic plate shifting is the most powerful force on earth – and ignored by the IPCC, NASA, NOAA, and the USGCRP as a reason for any worldwide rise and fall of sea levels.

    • Unbelievable says:

If you’re not bothered by the idea of climate change, then why are you rallying against it? if it’s not affecting you or those you care about, why are you even commenting? If you see it as a non-issue, why? why? why? are you here?

      • Hilarious says:

Why can no one in the Bermuda Government define “climate change?”
Why can YOU not define “climate change?”
If you are not bothered that neither the Government nor you can define “climate change,” why are you attacking me for pointing out the obvious and factual information?

        • Unbelievable says:

Climate change is real and it’s here. We are seeing it happening around the globe. One of reasons Syria plunged into civil war years ago was because of climate change when farmers moved to the cities to work because their farms became too arid. We see it with the hurricanes intensifying like never before and become more frequent. We see mild winters happening even in Bermuda over the last couple of years.
If you simply CHOOSE to act like it’s a non-issue, then the folly is on you. I’m not a PLP supporter but I couldn’t care less which car the Premier is driven around in. That’s irrelevant. I think there far more important things that the PLP are ignoring that you could be moaning about. Get with it, boo.
You’re probably an anti-vaxxer too for all we know. Lol.

          • Hilarious says:

You use “climate change,” and you have absolutely no clue of the definition. Why do you CHOOSE to be so unknowledgeable? Wait, do you work for the Government? Ahhh, that’s it!

As to your irrelevant deflection to the COVID “vaccine” because there are no flaws in the facts I posted, once again, you CHOOSE to be unknowledgeable.

And the “lol” card. So sad. What is next on your list of scripted replies? Let me guess, tRump is responsible for “climate change.”

        • Jus' Wonderin' says:

If you don’t believe in climate change it sounds like you don’t believe in science which is where the conversation ends. Climate change is absolutely real and won’t be going anywhere. Not even worth wasting your breathe or further replying with people like this!

          • Hilarious says:

Oh no! Not the “science” card! Would that be the “science” that repeatedly fails basic math? “All of the models that predict catastrophic global warming fail the key test of the scientific method: they grossly overpredict the warming versus actual data. The scientific method proves there is no risk that fossil fuels and carbon dioxide will cause catastrophic warming and extreme weather.”
            – William Happer, professor emeritus in Physics Princeton University, and Richard Lindzen, professor emeritus of Atmospheric Science MIT

For 100 bonus points, please define “climate change.”

      • Question says:

It’s a scam. We should not be spending scarce resources and borrowed government funds on it.

        • Unbelievable says:

I don’t see how climate change being a scam benefits any government or climate scientist. It’s so silly and ignorant. Probably a Trump supporter too.

          • Hilarious says:

HA! There it is, the Trump card! I am so good at this.
Let’s see, using “climate change” as an excuse, governments worldwide have increased control over our daily lives under the excuse to save the planet.

“Controlling carbon is a bureaucrat’s dream. If you control carbon, you control life.”
Richard Lindzen, Ph.D. Harvard University. Emeritus professor of Meteorology at MIT. Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT, Robert P. Burden Professor of Dynamic Meteorology at Harvard University. Recipient of the AMS’s Meisinger, and Charney Awards, the AGU’s Macelwane Medal, and the Leo Huss Walin Prize. Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society. Corresponding member of the NAS Committee on Human Rights, has been a member of the NRC Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, and the Council of the AMS. Never claimed to have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

This is all about money and control. As stated in a November 13, 2010, interview by former United Nations climate official Ottmar Edenhofer: “One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with the environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole,” said Edenhofer, who co-chaired the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change working group on Mitigation of Climate Change from 2008 to 2015. “We redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy,” said Edenhofer.

Got that? Said in November 2010, “We redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy,” said Edenhofer.

“Climate scientists” and their employers receive billions of dollars in grant money. There is no conflict of interest to see there, right?

Climate Ethics 101 question #1: If climate scientist Dr. Abc claims to have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, is that climate scientist a liar? Yes or No.

Climate Ethics 101 question #2: If climate scientist Abc’s employer claims their employee(s) won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, is that employer a liar? Yes or No.

Climate Ethics 101 question #3: If climate scientist Dr. Abc’s fellow scientists fail to report that Dr. Abc claimed to have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to the employer, are those scientists complicit in promoting the lie? Yes or No.

Climate Ethics 101 question #4: If climate scientist Dr. Abc’s undergraduate and graduate students fail to report that Dr. Abc claimed to have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to the school, are those students complicit in promoting the lie? Yes or No.

Climate Ethics 101 question #5: If the media fails to challenge Dr. Abc’s claim of winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, is the media promoting the lie? Yes or No.

Climate Ethics 101 question #6: If a scientific organization fails to challenge member Dr. Abc’s claim of winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, is the organization’s Board of Directors and thousands of members complicit in promoting the lie? Yes or No.

Thank you. But I know you will not directly answer any questions.

            • Unbelievable says:

Climate change really gets you upset. Calm down, love. You’ll be fine. After all, it’s a scam ain’t it?

              • Hilarious says:

There you go. I proved you wrong, and that is the best comeback you came up with. And as I predicted, you did not answer even one simple question. So sad.

Go figure, just another Internet poster with zero climate ethics. Say, have you ever claimed to be a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner? You know, just like hundreds of “climate scientists.” You can tell me, I can keep a secret.

        • Jus' Wonderin' says:

          A scam lmfaooo….yeah you’re really slow!

    • Toodle-oo says:

“Is the sea level rising ?”

If you think the sea level isn’t rising you must be blinded by your own agenda. Ferry reach was a peat bog at sea level a long time ago . Now it’s under 30 feet of water. Teddy Tucker pulled a 4000 year old petrified cedar stump off of the sea bed in 40 feet of water near Gurnet Rock a few years ago. Old photos of the slip at Dockyard taken a little over 100 years ago show a long gone high tide water mark that is now underwater . North Rock was once a moderate island of its own now barely a stump of rock at high tide.
The bay that I access in the Little Sound has a high tide mark a foot higher than it was than when I was a child .
And you think the sea level isn’t rising ? Continue with your Doubting Thomas theories, you’re not as smart as you think .

      • Hilarious says:

Consider the island is sinking due to factors like tectonic plates and not “climate change.” Say, can you please define “climate change?”

But hey, not even the IPCC, NOAA, NASA, or The Met can explain why sea level changes vary across the planet. Perhaps you should contact each organization for further details. Regale each organization with your expertise.

        • Toodle-oo says:

There’s a reason the Biological station (now BIOS) was set up here a very long time ago for research and information gathering . We are on one of the most stable tectonic plates in the world . I strongly doubt we’re ‘sinking’.

          • Hilarious says:

Yes, the reason was BIOS was funded. Failure to Ask Questions is a popular flavour of Kool-Aid.

And yet, changes in sea level worldwide go unexplained by the “experts.”

Thank you for not defining “climate change” because it is obvious that its meaning is beyond your ability to comprehend.

          • Question says:

The sea level is not rising. For goodness sake.

            • Hilarious says:

We have no credible explanation from the “experts” as to why sea levels appear to go up in some parts of the world, go down in other places, and remain the same in others.

After gravity, tectonic plate shifting is the most powerful force on earth – but ignored as a contributing factor in sea level changes by the IPCC, NOAA, NASA, The Met, and the USGCRP – US Global Change Research Program (Participants from Departments of: Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Energy, Health & Human Services, Homeland Security, Interior, State, Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, US Agency for International Development)

          • Hilarious says:

“We are on one of the most stable tectonic plates in the world.”

Excerpts from: Bermuda Geology – An Explanation of the Geology of Bermuda – Chapter 10. Earthquakes and Faults

Because crustal disturbances generally diminish away from plate boundaries, it was for many years argued (LA1,HA1,ME2,HE2) that the Bermuda Seamount is a stable edifice largely uninfluenced by tectonic forces. >>> However since the late 20th Century this assumed stability has increasingly been questioned (PE2,RO1,BO1,VA5,RO4).<<>> Evidence that tectonic forces exist in the vicinity of Bermuda is provided by unexpectedly high earthquake, or seismic, activity (ZO1,VO1). Local geologist Dr. Martin Brewer has catalogued a total of 56 earthquakes affecting Bermuda over the last 350 years (BR2). <<< One in 1664 was described in a church record as “a great and fearful Earthquake which did shake Churches and Houses, Yea and the hearts of man too” (Bermuda Government archives). This 1664 earthquake was considered by Dr. Brewer to have qualified as “destructive”, with an estimated Richter magnitude of ~ 6.3.

A degree of tectonic instability at Bermuda in modern times is evident from the previously mentioned record of earthquakes. Equivalent or, arguably much greater, instability in the geological past is witnessed by faults, which are extant in Bermuda’s Pleistocene limestone bedrock (RO4). These faults are unmistakeable where there is displacement of a fossil soil layer, known as a palaeosol (Figures 10a – 10e). Where, on the other hand, there is no palaeosol, faults can be easily overlooked or are equivocal. This has perpetuated the under-reporting of faulting on Bermuda.

Figure 10g. Large fracture at Ferry Point, St. George’s Island. A soil-filled fissure in the Rocky Bay Formation. (Yellow 1 m rule, spanning the fissure, provides scale).
The two principal fracture alignments on Bermuda – approximately SW-NE and SE-NW – were considered by Scheidegger (SC1) to reflect tectonic stress trajectories in the North American tectonic plate. It could be coincidental, but long straight stretches of Bermuda’s coastline including the South Shore, the east and north coastlines of St George’s Island and Abbots Cliff in Harrington Sound parallel these orientations. Certainly fracture planes have locally been exploited by coastal erosion but the extent to which this has affected coastal retreat on a large scale is hard to assess.

            Awwww, shucks…..

      • Hilarious says:

Bermuda Geology – An Explanation of the Geology of Bermuda – Figure 2b. Bermuda and the North American Tectonic Plate. The Bermuda volcanic seamount is rooted in the North American tectonic plate. It is drifting away from the Mid-Atlantic ridge in a generally north-westerly direction. The eruption of new oceanic crust at the Mid-Atlantic ridge – a “constructive plate boundary” – contributes to expansion of the Atlantic Ocean at a rate of 2.5 cm (1 in) per year.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

If you want to see a dramatic change in sea level and storm damage caused in the last 60 years, look no further than Hungry Bay on the Paget South Shore. A large area of the mangroves, gone. A new entrance for water to the bay created. Look no further than the baby beach/cove at the west end of Horsehoe Bay that no longer exists.

    • Hilarious says:

Erosion, gosh. Our volcanic island is crumbling. Perhaps NOAA can provide you with specific details using its one sea level gauge here, which is +/—17% accurate.

  3. Hilarious says:

For 100 bonus points, who here who keeps using “climate change” in their comments can actually define “climate change?” Come on now, step up and be heard, unless you work in Government.

    Don’t be shy.
    Thank you.

  4. PAC MAN says:

Here I am wondering why all of you here on this page can not resolve the myth of climate change and tidal shifts.

Eventually our sun will burn up planet earth in a few million years as it come closer to our planet .

The Milky Way and Andrometer will crash into one another as others have and are doing ,the universe is far from stable .

We should be more concerned about Ailien encounters and if Liverpool and Manchester city will draw.

Active Volcanoes, forest fires ,and wars could be the blame including our prime ministers B.M.W.

We should all have a B.M.W

If i add up all the money I paid to T.C.D. I could have had three B.M.W.’s .

There was a time not too far back in history during the time of Queen Victoria coal burning was the only sourse of their energy .

That was why all the brits purchases black cars . soot every where .

Who are those who attend those international meetings are ,and what do they stand for, could it be to encourage the sale of expensive electric cars.

If Canada ; USA; Mexico ; and South America, and Bermuda all went green it would not make one bit of difference.

The Bermuda Government did not get an invitation to the global meeting ! wonder why? We only have 4 smoke stacks .

If you did but know it, all of you, including me, are being controlled and manipulated.

    • Hilarious says:

Because: “Controlling carbon is a bureaucrat’s dream. If you control carbon, you control life.”
