Spelling Bee Semi-Finals This Sunday

A buzz will be in the air this Sunday, 2nd February as the Semi-Finals of Bermuda Spelling Bee 2025 take place.

A spokesperson said, “Verbal Victory – Bermuda Spelling Bee, an exciting new competition for Bermuda’s school children, was launched by the former Governor, Ms. Rena Lalgie, in a City Hall ceremony on 22nd May 2024.

“The competition is open to Bermuda’s public, home-schooled and private school children aged 9-13 and is designed to enhance not only their spelling skills, but also their cognitive, literacy and life skills. Participating students are being equipped with tools that will help them to develop a rich vocabulary and to express themselves with clarity and confidence.

“Schools have shown tremendous interest in the Spelling Bee. From September, teachers have been busy preparing their students who have been learning words set out in a booklet provided by the Organizing Committee.

“The Spelling Bee’s organizers are delighted to announce that twenty-six of the Island’s schools will be entering students in the competition. Because of the pleasingly large number of participants, the schools have been divided into three Regions: Eastern, Central and Western,

“Three Semi-Finals will be held simultaneously this Sunday, 2nd February:

  • Eastern Region – CedarBridge Academy
  • Central Region – The Berkeley Institute
  • Western Region – Bermuda College

“The Organizing Committee wishes to thank the many members of the public who have volunteered to serve during the Semi-Finals. These include Spell Masters, Judges, Recordkeepers, Dictionary Consultants and others. The organizers also wish to thank Platinum Sponsor, The Royal Gazette Ltd., Silver Sponsor, Contemporary OB/GYN, Bronze Sponsors Conyers, Allied World and Trott & Duncan and other sponsors for their contribution to the success of the Spelling Bee.

“Public attendance at the Semi-Finals will be by invitation only. Schools have been allocated a limited number of tickets for distribution to participating students’ family members and friends.

“The top three spellers from each Semi-Final will advance to the Final which will be held on Saturday, 8th March. All students who participate will receive Certificates of Appreciation. Trophies and other prizes will be awarded to the winner, first runner-up and second runner-up during the Final.”

Ahead of the Semi-Finals, Justice Norma Wade-Miller, Chairman of the Verbal Victory – Bermuda Spelling Bee Trustees said: “I am delighted to note the progress that has been made since the launch of this initiative. The planning and mounting of the competition have involved a huge team effort. The response of our volunteers, teachers and parents has been wonderful and, of course, the energy and enthusiasm shown by all our students from schools throughout the Island have been infectious and so encouraging! And so to the Final on 8th March!”
