City Pays Tribute To George Leon Burt
The City of Hamilton extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late George Leon Burt, saying his “passing marks the loss of one of Bermuda’s most distinguished craftsmen and a true pillar of the island’s built heritage.”
A spokesperson said, “Mr. Burt’s extraordinary contributions to Bermuda’s landscape, particularly his work on City Hall, leave an enduring legacy. As one of the skilled masons and craftsmen who helped create the iconic structure, Mr. Burt played a pivotal role in shaping one of Hamilton’s most treasured landmarks. His disciplined craftsmanship was exemplified in his work on the site over nearly a year and his historic act of laying the cornerstone of City Hall.
“Beyond City Hall, Mr. Burt’s influence can be seen across Hamilton and the island. He lent his expertise to numerous important buildings, including the Cabinet Office and public libraries, ensuring that these spaces would serve the community for generations to come.
“The City of Hamilton was privileged to honor Mr. Burt during Black History Month in 2020, when a display in the City Hall lobby paid tribute to his contributions and trailblazing achievements. His work has left an indelible mark not only on the city’s landscape but also on the hearts of those who knew him and admired his craft.”
“We join the entire island in mourning the loss of George Leon Burt,” said City CEO Dwayne Caines. “His work shaped not just our cityscape but also our understanding of the power of craftsmanship, dedication, and community pride. His legacy will live on in the structures he helped create and in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.”
