Sean Trott is gearing up for a fierce challenge in the BF&M 10K race on Saturday [January 18], where he expects to face some of the island’s finest runners alongside tough international competitors.

The 35-year-old, who finished fifth last year with a time of 34min and 24sec, acknowledges that repeating or improving on that performance will demand his absolute best.

Top local runners are expected to be among the stacked field, as well as several formidable overseas entrants.

Trott said he is embracing the high stakes and relishing the opportunity to push his limits against such a strong line-up.

“It’s more motivating when you’re up against this calibre of field,” Trott told Bernews. “I always prefer it when all the top local guys are out.

“I believe there’s also a reasonable sized field of visiting runners, which further bumps up the competition.”

Trott finished last year in fine form, winning the Swans Running Club/Northshore Medical Turkey Trot 8K and the Red Cross Jingle Bell 5K, and coming third in the Friends of Sandys 5K.

He also achieved a personal best in the TCS New York City Marathon in 2:41:48 in November.

“I competed in New York, which was only my second marathon, to give me a good base of miles for the fall,” he said.

“During the Christmas period, I started to introduce some more speed work. I’ve been training with Ryan Outerbridge, who’s back from university in the US.

“We’ve done a few sessions together, which has been hugely beneficial.”

A consistent top ten finisher in the 10K over the years, Trott believes the event is among the most anticipated races on the local calendar.

“It’s second-best supported [long-distance] running race in Bermuda behind May 24, when it comes to the crowd and the number of participants.

“It’s a race I always look forward to each year.”
