In a heartfelt celebration of resilience and leadership, a park has been christened in honor of a man who overcame the harsh realities of racial segregation. Nestled near the Francis Patton Parish School Dock, the newly established Scouter Isaac Community Park was unveiled on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, amidst the presence of family, friends, and esteemed government dignitaries.

The park proudly bears the name of Harrison E.G.N. Isaac Sr., a trailblazer whose passion for scouting ignited at the tender age of 17. In 1965, he founded the 24th Bermuda 1st Shelly Bay Scout Troop, setting the stage for a legacy of courage and dedication. Just a year later, his unwavering commitment earned him the prestigious Queen’s Scout designation. By 1968, Harrison had shattered barriers to become Bermuda’s youngest scout leader, a testament to his extraordinary spirit.

Harrison’s journey was marked by his triumph over the adversities of a racially segregated era. His family reminisced, “He became a symbol of inspiration to many as he formed and led the 1st Shelly Bay Scout Troop of Hamilton Parish.” One poignant story highlights his determination: “Scouter Isaac was tasked with climbing a palm tree to earn his climbing badge, while other scouts were given the easier challenge of navigating a tree with multiple branches. Despite injuring himself in the endeavor, Scouter Isaac prevailed, embodying true perseverance.”

Beyond his early achievements, Harrison continued to shape the scouting community and beyond. In the 1980s, he played a pivotal role in founding the Bermuda Scout Museum & Historical Society, ensuring that the rich history of scouting in Bermuda would be preserved for future generations.

The Ujima Foundation, renowned for annually recognizing individuals who bring positivity to Hamilton Parish, lauded Harrison’s legacy. In their statement, they expressed, “May we all seek to be a branch in the lives of others like these honorees whose influence and legacy we will hold dear.” The foundation’s name, Ujima, resonates with the third principle of Kwanzaa, symbolizing collective work and responsibility—a fitting tribute to Harrison’s lifelong dedication.

Mr. Isaac Sr.’s family added, “He positively influenced many lives over three decades through his service to the scouts and the broader community.” His enduring impact is now immortalized in the Scouter Isaac Community Park, a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who visit.
