Column: Chris Famous On Race And Politics

[Opinion column written by MP Chris Famous]

On the subject[s] of race and politics in Bermuda.

A lifelong friend/Bermuda Cousin asked earlier “where was the other half of Bermuda in the PLP line up?”

It is actually a good question, and one that is asked every election since 1963. The reality is just like; the AME Church, the Unions, Berkeley Institute etc. anything that was founded by Black Bermudians is, for one reason or another, deemed as “not for non-Blacks”.

Which in reality is a statement about the hypocrisy of us as people on a whole.

We all know our 400+ year history and why things are the way they have been and in some cases still are. There is no one going to deny that. However, over the last 4 elections; 2012, 2017, 2020 and now 2025 there is a shift in the mindsets of a proportion of our population.

Over the course of time not every person that identifies as black or mixed is voting PLP. Likewise not every person that identifies as white or mixed is voting OBA. For further proof you can look at the fact that many seats of mixed / equal demographics could go either way politically. Not based solely on race, but more so the connections / relationships that candidates / MPs have or have not made with the voters.

The fact remains that many/most people, no matter their complexion or income levels, simply want someone to be there for them and their families, long before and long after an election is called.

We as Bermudians and residents still have a long way to go in a lot of things in this country. In my humble opinion, it starts with us willing to honestly talk and listen to each other as equals. If and when we do that, then we will see the politics of the island be based on merit.

Stay blessed Bermuda.

- Thomas Christopher Famous – PLP Candidate for Constituency 11 – Devonshire East

Swear I lost braincells reading whatever this incoherent ramble was supposed to be about.

  2. Roger says:

Very confusing piece. The PLP have solely focused on race for decades and now you want us to believe that isn’t your angle? The PLP are divisive, they trade on race as a negative when it has to be the opposite and they hide behind it to mask their terrible, shocking performance as a Government.

I don’t know where you are going with this Chris, I really don’t.

Oh and to be clear the foundations of Trade Unionism go way before Bermuda nd race plays no part in it.
