Somner Family Holds Community Cleanup
The Somner family, led by Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] Executive Director Angel Smith, honoured the legacy of Mary Somner with a community cleanup in Hamilton Parish, collecting 649 pounds of litter and clearing debris.
A spokesperson said, “On Sunday, February 23, Keep Bermuda Beautiful’s Executive Director, Angel Smith, organised a special family event to honour the legacy of her late matriarch, Mary Somner [née Richardson]. The Somner family gathered in the neighbourhood where Mary grew up and raised her family, at the top of Cottage Hill in Hamilton Parish, to give back to the community she loved.
“More than 35 family members, spanning generations ranging in ages 3 to 80-years-old, met and devised a plan to set out in different directions to clean up the neighbourhood. Among them was the family’s current matriarch, 80-year-old Edna Ameenah Sharrieff, who kept pace with the younger collectors, demonstrating her commitment to keeping Bermuda beautiful.
“The Somner family’s efforts were nothing short of remarkable, collecting 649 pounds of litter. Their contributions didn’t stop there; several men in the group took it a step further by trimming overgrown trees and clearing debris, ensuring the neighbourhood looked better than they found it.
“Their dedication transformed the area into a cleaner and more inviting space, much to the appreciation of local residents, including Mary’s youngest son Lawrence and his family, who still reside in the neighbourhood.
