A screenwriting and acting masterclass led by two accomplished Bermudian creatives will take place at Ignite Bermuda in Hamilton on Saturday [April 26].

Focused on the art of film and television, the Frames for the Future Masterclass runs from 9am to 5pm and is open to senior students and adults with an interest in storytelling for the screen.

The intensive programme aims to equip participants with industry-standard skills while inspiring a collective vision of Bermuda as a vibrant hub for narrative filmmaking.

Guiding the masterclass are Sia Spence, a screenwriter, producer, and founder of Frames for the Future, and Lana Young, a seasoned actress and respected acting coach.

Ms Spence hopes the pilot programme, including two hands-on workshops: Screenwriting Basics and Acting for the Camera, will lay the foundation for a series of future workshops and masterclasses.

“They are many extremely talented Bermudians in the acting field, particularly on stage and behind the camera – videographers, photography etc,” said Ms Spence, who has been networking and building relationships within the film industry in Atlanta since 2019.

“My goal is to teach those individuals already in the industry and those who aren’t to an industry standard.”

Ms Spence, an associate producer on The Waterboyz and Little Brother, added: “I’d like to plan another event, longer than just one intensive day, and bring in more individuals in the industry to share their knowledge.”

Ms Young, known for her roles in Greenleaf, The Resident, and Tyler Perry’s A Jazzman’s Blues, is using her platform to inspire others – particularly those who may feel it is too late to start anew.

Her journey into acting did not follow the traditional path. She began her formal training well into adulthood, an experience she now uses to motivate others facing similar crossroads in life.

“I moved to the US aged 28, having previously worked in the corporate world, and didn’t go to drama school until I was in my 30s,” she said.

“I recognise there are several ‘older’ people coming to the classes and would encourage them to be open to any life-changing paths open to them.

“It’s never too late to engage and explore new things. I’m still learning new creative things. It’s an ever-unfolding story.”

Ms Young is also deeply passionate about staying connected to her roots and remains committed to contributing to the growth of the arts in Bermuda.

“I’m always looking at ways to bring Bermuda into the picture,” she added.

“Sia has worked so hard to get this programme up and running. When she approached me to get involved, it was hard to say no to!”

Frames for the Future is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Transport, Culture & Sport and New Edge Diagnostics.
