Nikki Bascome Vows To ‘Keep Fighting’

Boxer Nikki Bascome has pledged to “keep fighting” after suffering a first-round defeat to American Tahmir Smalls in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last weekend.

The Bermudian welterweight, who has a record of 13 wins and two losses, was stopped by the taller and undefeated Smalls – marking only the second loss of Bascome’s professional career.

The bout was on the undercard of the welterweight unification match between two unbeaten champions: IBF titleholder Jaron Ennis and WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis. Ennis claimed victory with a sixth-round stoppage.

Smalls, 25, extended his perfect record to 14 consecutive wins.

“I want to start by thanking everyone who has supported me throughout this journey,” Bascome wrote on social media.

“The words of encouragement have given me the strength to keep fighting.

“Although, the result wasn’t what I hoped for, I’m proud of my professionalism and the experience I gained.

“Disappointment is a part of growth, and I’m using this as motivation to come back stronger.

“To my supporters, I appreciate your continued support – this is just a chapter, not the whole story.

“I would also like to thank Matchroom Boxing and Tahmir Smalls for the opportunity.”
