Video: Sean Trott & Gayle Lindsay Claim Titles
[Updated with PDF] Sean Trott and Gayle Lindsay have been crowned the male and female winners of the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby today [May 23].
Trott, a four-time runner-up, claimed his maiden title, finishing the 13.1-mile course from St George’s to Hamilton in 1hr 14min 31sec.
Meanwhile, Lindsay won her third successive title after clocking a time of 1:26:38.
In the men’s race, Ryan Outerbridge came second for the second straight year, finishing in 1:15:40, with Thomas Mills third in 1:17:21. Lamont Marshall, the defending champion, came fourth in 1:17:50.
Trott, who made a strategic shift this season – racing less and training smarter – said he felt like he was on “cloud nine”.
He added: “I always knew how much support I had, but to see the level of support … I’ve been touched.
“I made the break between miles 10 and 11. I thought ‘Keep the gap, don’t let it close and enjoy yourself’.
“It was surreal seeing the finish line. I got goosebumps.”
Outerbridge said he felt comfortable until mile nine when Trott picked up the pace.
“My right calf started to cramp up a bit and I dropped off,” he said. “I ran it off, but right before Front Street, it returned.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t my year. My year will come.”
Christine Dailey was runner-up in the women’s race in 1:28:19, with Teresa Ruiz third in 1:31:46.
Lindsay said she was “over the moon” to become a three-time champion of the iconic annual race.
“To win one [title] is amazing, to win three is something you dream of,” she told Bernews.
“It’s still sinking in. There will be a lot of celebrating and smiling for the next few weeks. I’m really happy.”
The runner said she decided to try and put some distance between herself and Dailey coming up Tee Street.
“I managed to pull away and build up a bit of a gap. I knew it would be a tough day at the office. I think I ran a smart race.”
Dailey said the race felt harder than last year when she also finished second.
“I found this year harder and maybe it was more humid,” she said. “I ran most of the race with Gayle until the Arboretum hill and then I was struggling.
“I just tried to hold on until the finish.”
