A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda High School is pleased to announce that Mr James Nightingale has been appointed Head of Secondary from August 2025 onwards.

“Mr Nightingale will take the reins from Miss Catherine Hollingsworth, who is shifting her focus away from the Secondary department, serving exclusively as Deputy Head of School. Miss Hollingsworth joined BHS in August 2012 as Deputy Head of School before taking on the additional role of Head of Secondary in January 2013.”

Ms Carol A. Swainson, Head of School, remarked, “Miss Hollingsworth has been a tremendous leader of Secondary. Serving as Deputy Head will permit us to work even more strategically as a whole school.”

The spokesperson said, “A dedicated educator, Mr Nightingale holds a First-Class BSc in Geography from the University of Nottingham and an MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation & Management from the University of Oxford, where he earned a Distinction.

“He later completed his PGCE at the University of Gloucestershire, equipping him with the pedagogical expertise to inspire students both inside and outside the classroom. Prior to joining BHS, Mr Nightingale taught Geography at Prince Henry’s High School and Nunnery Wood High School in the UK, where he also took on leadership roles in pastoral care, sustainability initiatives, and global partnerships.

“Mr Nightingale has been a key member of the BHS community since 2017, serving as Head of Humanities in the Secondary department. In this capacity, he has overseen a diverse range of subjects, including Geography, History, Business Studies, Economics, and Global Politics, guiding both middle and senior school students through the IGCSE, IB, and A Level curricula. Under his leadership, the Humanities department expanded its offerings and provided students with enriching experiential learning opportunities, including overseas study trips to destinations such as Iceland, Germany and New York.

“Beyond academics, Mr Nightingale is passionate about fostering a school environment that encourages curiosity, resilience, and integrity. A keen sports enthusiast, he actively supports student engagement in extracurricular activities and believes in preparing young people for success in an ever-changing world.”

“As an existing member of staff, Mr Nightingale is already respected by parents, colleagues and students. He sees the importance of an educational environment that fosters the development of personal and academic growth, and he has already shown his dedication to ensuring our students have a rich understanding of the world around them. I am excited to be working with Mr Nightingale to continue to grow and strengthen BHS as it moves forward,” commented Miss Hollingsworth.

Mr Nightingale said, “I am absolutely delighted to take on the role of Head of Secondary at Bermuda High School, a community that holds a special place in my heart. BHS has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and I am eager to continue working alongside our talented staff and incredible students to build on that legacy. My goal is to inspire, support, and challenge our students to reach their full potential, ensuring they leave BHS with strong academic foundations and the confidence and skills to thrive in the wider world.”

Ms Swainson added, “We are thrilled to welcome Mr Nightingale to this role and look forward to what his leadership will bring to our community.”
