Airez Gilbert-Simons Places Runner-Up
Bermudian tennis player Airez Gilbert-Simons and her Johnson C. Smith University team-mates have enjoyed an impressive season after finishing runners-up in the recent Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships in North Carolina.
The Charlotte-based university lost 4-0 to seven-times winners Shaw University in Raleigh in the final.
Johnson C. Smith secured their place final after wins in their quarter-final and semi-final.
They began their campaign with a dominant performance against Elizabeth City State University in the quarter-finals, sweeping the doubles matches to take an early advantage.
Two singles victories followed to seal a 4-1 win and advance to the semi-finals.
The semi-final clash against Bluefield State University proved to be a much tighter affair, with JCSU winning 4-3 victory.
Freshman Gilbert-Simons and her partner lost 6-4 to Azia Thomas and Marissa Paul.
