As the Rotary Interact Club marks 10 years since its reintroduction on the island, former Hamilton Rotary Interact members “have either completed university, moved on to post-graduate studies, or have commenced their careers locally and globally.”

A spokesperson said, “The Hamilton Rotary Interactors who joined the Rotary Interact Club, reintroduced 10 years ago after Past President Cathy Bassett returned to Bermuda from a Rotary at the United Nations Conference in New York, have either completed university, moved on to post-graduate studies, or have commenced their careers locally and globally.

“The first Interact Club in Bermuda was established 50 years ago by Past President Kirk Kitson. Students met weekly for fellowship and service projects. After the Interactors aged out of Interact as young adults, the club came to an end and was restarted in 2015. Along with Hamilton Rotary, Interact Clubs were started at Somersfield Academy, CedarBridge Academy, and Mount St. Agnes.

“Students took part in numerous service projects, including planting trees at Warwick Academy and Eve’s Pond, creating raised organic gardens for seniors, starting girls’ hygiene programs in middle and secondary schools, establishing feeding programs for those in need, enhancing KBB environmental cleanups, and furnishing seniors with care packets and warm socks during the winter.

“They donated thousands of dollars to charities, helped to fund the purchase of a therapy pony for disabled students at WindReach, donated funds to a rural school in Zimbabwe to help build a well, presented international topic papers at the United Nations, and collected and donated hundreds of books to various children’s charities. They also hosted an online seniors check-in service for seniors during the Covid epidemic and financed the purchase of books for online tutoring during Covid, where all students being tutored by volunteer tutors improved their reading ability from two to eight levels when assessed.

“Rotary Bermuda salutes all Rotary presidents and advisers past and present and all Rotarians and friends of Rotary for their ongoing support and hard work shown to all Rotary youth, representing all secondary schools and several homeschools on the island.

“Our students have proven that faith, determination, and solidarity move mountains.”
