Taylor Carrick secured Bermuda’s first medal at the International Island Games in Orkney after claiming a silver medal in squash yesterday [July 15].
Carrick was defeated 3-0 [12-10, 11,5, 11-9] by Finlay Scott, of Orkney, in the final of the men’s singles at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall.
“I’m very proud of the whole week,” Carrick told Bernews.
“I wish I could have brought home a gold medal, but I’m happy to start the chain.
“I’m going to be rooting hard for the rest of the team to win some medals.”
Bermuda men’s under-23 and women’s teams have advanced to the semi-finals after they both achieved wins in their final group games.
The men’s team fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Ynys Mon in a heated encounter at the Stomness Academy.
A superb 91st-minute free kick from midfielder Jakeem Jennings and a 22md-minute finish from striker Mason Christian accounted for Bermuda’s goals.
However, the team suffered a blow in the second half when Caleb McDowell was forced off with a broken leg and dislocated ankle after a reckless challenge by a Ynys Mon player.
Bermuda top group C with four points from two games and will face Jersey tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the women’s team won their third successive match after defeating the Shetland Islands 2-0 thanks to a brace from Jahni Simmons at Kirkwall Grammar School.
The striker opened the scoring with a left-footed effort in the 38th minute before slotting home with a neat finish in the 72nd minute.
Bermuda, the defending champions, face Goza in the semi-finals tomorrow.
It was a memorable day for golfer Sienna Mosquera, who set a new women’s course record at Stromness Golf Club in the second round of the women’s competition.
Mosquera fired a three-under-par 65, moving into a tie for first place with a total score of 147 from the opening two rounds.
The previous record of one-under par had stood since 2008.
The 18-year-old, whose round included six birdies, said “I didn’t even think about the possibility of breaking the course record – it’s so awesome.
“It was a really great day. [Winning a medal] is the goal for the individual and team events. We all had a good day today.”
Jarryd Dillas leads the way for the men’s team after shooting a second round of 74 at Orkney Golf Club, leaving him tied in fourteenth with an overall score of 145.
In badminton, Aaron Simmons has reached the last 16 of the men’s singles after beating Eban Jones, of Ynys Mon, 2-0 in the round of 32 at the Pickaquoy Centre.
He faces the No-1 seed Runi Oster, of the Faroe Islands, today.
Jake Brislane came fifth in the men’s 1,500 metres final after finishing in 3min 59.63sec at the Pickaquoy Centre.
In lawn bowls, David Leach finished fourth after winning four of his six round-robin matches at the Kirkwall Bowling Club.

Well done, team Bermuda!
