Three Bermudians Graduate From Albert College

Albert College honoured 46 graduates on June 14, including Bermudians Skye Backeberg, Elias Davies, and Clarice Mahabir, who will begin university studies this fall.

A spokesperson said, “Albert College recognized 46 graduates at its 168th Convocation celebration on June 14. Grade 12 graduates were recognized with top awards and celebrated their many accomplishments this year, in addition to receiving their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The students hail from Canada as well as Australia, Nigeria, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, China, Spain, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Japan and the United States.

“Among the graduates were Bermudians Skye Backeberg, Elias Davies and Clarice Mahabir.

“Skye is from Hamilton and attended Albert College for three years. This academic year, Skye was a member of the gold-winning girls basketball and ultimate Frisbee teams, participated in Model United Nations where she received the outstanding delegate award and received two awards at a mock trial competition. In the arts, she participated in choir, three major productions, Ontario drama and music festivals and the Rotary Music Festival. At Convocation, Skye won the English and politics awards. Skye received the Frederick Sydney Smith ’31 Scholarship for three consecutive years, available to Bermudian students wishing to study at Albert College. Skye will attend the University of Nottingham, England, to pursue an honours degree in law.

“Clarice is also from Hamilton and attended Albert College for two years. Her fondest memories include Albert’s ski days and her first camping experience where she enjoyed canoeing and archery. Clarice was a member of the field hockey team and served as co-coach of the senior team, while also practising weight training, yoga and Muay Thai at the school. She served as chairperson of the men’s mental health initiative, helping to raise awareness and foster open conversations within the school community. In the fall, she will attend McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, for neuroscience and psychology.

“Elias is from Devonshire and attended Albert College for three years. Elias was a member of the gold-winning ultimate Frisbee team, performed in the drama production and was a contributor to the annual art exhibit, winning first place in this year’s senior drawing category. He was a member of the ACT [activism, community service, team-building] committee, and received an outstanding delegate award in Model United Nations. Elias also received the Frederick Sydney Smith ’31 Scholarship for Bermudians studying at Albert College. In the fall, he will attend the University of Toronto – St. George, in Canada, for cognitive science and ethics, society and law.”
