Young Chefs Get A Taste Of Hospitality Industry
Bermuda’s next generation of culinary stars got a taste of the hospitality industry last week during the Young Chef Experience, a collaborative community activation hosted by The Loren, in partnership with the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] and the Bermuda Government Summer Day Camp Programme.
A spokesperson said, “The immersive experience brought together twelve children—eleven campers and one visiting pre-teen from New York— for a memorable culinary journey. It began with a foraging activity at Yard Farm, followed by a hands-on cooking workshop led by Chef Tiffany Derry, the acclaimed international chef and restaurateur best known for her appearances on Top Chef, Bobby Flay’s Triple Threat, and her newest role as co-judge alongside Gordon Ramsay on MasterChef Season 15.
“Chef Derry was in Bermuda as part of The Loren’s annual Celebrity Summer Chef Series, and this marked her third visit to the island. Campers participated in the “Yard Farm Challenge,” where they picked fresh ingredients, then headed to The Loren to take part in a student cooking challenge using their harvest. Working in teams, the children prepared and shared a meal of their own creation – getting a real taste of what it means to work in a professional kitchen.”
“This event is part of our annual Celebrity Summer Chef Series, and we’re honoured to welcome Chef Tiffany Derry back for the third time,” said Andre Roberts, Hotel Manager at The Loren. “She always makes it a priority to give back to the kids, and that spirit of generosity and mentorship is deeply rooted in our company culture.
“It reflects the kind of positive impact we aim to make in every community we’re part of. We look forward to replicating this type of programme at our other regional properties, including the recently acquired Elbow Beach, once it comes online. Personally, my own hospitality journey began in the kitchen — at the heart of the house — and I believe it’s the perfect place to introduce young people to the possibilities within hospitality and tourism. It’s an environment where creativity, teamwork, and community come together, and we’re proud to be part of showcasing that opportunity to Bermuda’s youth.”
“This initiative is a great example of what can be achieved when government, industry stakeholders, and community partners work together,” said Owen Darrell, Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport. “It connects tourism, education, sustainability, and youth development in one empowering experience. The Bermuda Government is pleased to support programmes that expose our young people to internationally successful professionals like Chef Tiffany Derry, while showing them that hospitality can be a creative, respected, and rewarding career path.”
A spokesperson added, “The initiative supports the Local Involvement pillar of Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan, which calls for deeper community engagement in tourism through education, skills development, and cultural storytelling.”
“This experience was more than a cooking class — it was an introduction to hospitality as a dynamic and fulfilling career,” said Zina Edwards, Director of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement at the BTA. “By engaging young people in immersive, joyful experiences like this, we are planting the seeds of curiosity, confidence, and community pride — all essential to building a strong future workforce for Bermuda’s tourism industry.”
