Age Concern Bermuda has launched its Workforce Equity Campaign called ‘Hire the Experience’ to ”advocate for fairer employment opportunities across generations.”

A spokesperson said, “Age Concern Bermuda [ACB] has heard the voices of older adults who say age discrimination continues to be a barrier to fair and meaningful employment in Bermuda. Today, ACB announces the launch of its Workforce Equity Campaign: “Hire the Experience”. This is a community-wide initiative to address workplace inequities and advocate for fairer employment opportunities across generations.

“As Bermuda’s population ages, the contribution of older workers has never been more valuable,” said Mercedes Pringle-DeSilva, Executive Director of Age Concern Bermuda. “Our members and clients have told us about the challenges they face – from missed opportunities to workplace prejudice – but also about the incredible strength’s older adults bring such as mentorship, reliability, and lived experience. We are committed to doing something about it, and we need the community’s help.”

“The campaign aims to gather real insight from across Bermuda through three dedicated surveys:

“1. Public Perceptions & Experiences Survey – We invite all residents to share their voices in this survey, which explores the challenges older workers may face, how people of all ages experience hiring and career growth, and what the community knows about workforce equity. Your input will help shape policies, workplace practices, and cultural shifts that make it easier for older adults to thrive at work.

“2. “Share Your Story” Survey- Specifically for older adults, this survey collects lived experiences, both positive and negative – in the workplace. With permission, these stories may be featured in the Hire the Experience awareness campaign to highlight the value of older workers in real, relatable terms.

“3. HR Professionals & Employers Survey – This survey, designed for employers and HR professionals, looks at how workplace policies and practices support age inclusion, explores views on retirement, training, and accommodations, and identifies opportunities to create more equitable workplaces for employees of every age.

“Age Concern is inviting the whole community to take part in shaping a fairer, more inclusive workforce. Residents can share their experiences and views on equity and opportunity across age groups. Older workers are encouraged to tell their stories about challenges and successes.

“Employers and HR professionals can provide insights into workplace policies, retirement norms, and practices that support or hinder age inclusion.”

“Creating a fairer workforce is not only about protecting rights – it’s about unlocking value,” added Mrs. Pringle-DeSilva. “Every older adult who is able to continue contributing, strengthens our businesses, our economy, and our community.”

A spokesperson added, “The results of these surveys will guide Age Concern’s advocacy and programme development, ensuring Bermuda moves toward a more inclusive and equitable workforce for all. Together, your input will help drive meaningful cultural, organizational, and policy changes that ensure people of all ages can thrive at work.
