Jutorre Burgess On Call-Up For Qualifiers

Teenage footballer Jutorre Burgess is relishing his first international call-up as Bermuda prepare to face regional powerhouse Jamaica in a crunch World Cup qualifier at the Flora Duffy Stadium on Friday [September 5].
The 19-year-old has forced his way into coach Michael Findlay’s squad after catching the eye with a string of impressive performances for Harborough Town in England’s Southern League Premier Central Division.
And while Burgess admits he may have to bide his time for a debut, he is desperate to make his mark on the international stage.
“It’s a great feeling [being called up],” Burgess told Bernews. “I thank the coach for giving me a chance.
“I want to show everyone what I can do, and hopefully I can make my debut during this camp.
“If it doesn’t come, I’ll keep pushing and working hard. I’m sure I’ll make my debut somewhere down the line.”
Bermuda have been grouped with Jamaica, Curaçao and Trinidad and Tobago in the final round of the qualifiers, with the winners advancing to next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico – a mouth-watering prospect that Burgess said is fuelling the squad.
“Every player dreams of playing on the biggest stage,” said Burgess, who scooped Harborough’s Young Player of the Season award last term.
“We’re looking to put ourselves on the map. Some teams might take us lightly, but we’re not a light challenge.
“We don’t really feel any pressure – that’s not the atmosphere we’re trying to create. The atmosphere is chilled and calm.”
The winger, who honed his skills on the island with Hamilton Parish and FC Bascome before heading to England, insists Bermuda’s home support will be vital against Jamaica.
“The atmosphere in the camp is high,” he said. “Everyone will be striving to get across the line [against Jamaica].
“We’re up for the challenge and know the fans will get behind us and push us on as the ‘twelfth man’. We want to keep making history.”
Burgess also credits the competitive level of the non-league in England for accelerating his rise.
“It’s been a great journey so far,” he added. “Playing against men week in, week out in England has certainly helped my development.
“I’m just focused on Harborough right now and seeing where it can take me.”
