“Bermudian writer and cultural ambassador Tiara S. Webb served as one of the judges at the first-ever Wapax! Regional Poetry Slam, held during Carifesta XV in Barbados last week.

A spokesperson said, “The slam, which was covered by Barbados Today, marked a historic moment for the Caribbean’s literary arts, bringing together poets from Barbados, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.”

“I am full to the brim,” said Webb. “This was history in the making, and I was honored to witness and support poets from across the region. The Caribbean’s literary voices deserve visibility alongside its music, food, and performance traditions.”

A spokesperson added, “In addition to judging the slam, Webb participated in Carifesta’s Writers’ Clinic and attended a Prose Masterclass led by award-winning Grenadian author and editor Jacob Ross of Peepal Tree Press. She also co-founded a writers’ support group with participants from the class, strengthening connections across the Caribbean literary community.

“Through her work with Bermuda Voices, Webb continues to create safe spaces for writers on the island. Bermuda Voices was directly inspired by Nailah Imoja, a celebrated Barbadian award winning novelist, poet and literary arts director for Carifesta, who served as Bermuda’s Writer-in-Residence instructor earlier this year. Nailah’s mentorship and teaching planted the seed that grew into Bermuda Voices, a collective committed to giving Bermudian writers opportunities to share, support, and grow in dialogue with each other and with the wider region. By building connections at Carifesta, Webb plans to extend this mission, ensuring Bermudian voices are rooted in the broader Caribbean conversation.”
