Gherdai Hassell Named KLAT Awards Finalist

Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell has been named a finalist for the International Creative of the Year Award at the KLAT Awards, honoring her global impact as a visual storyteller and cultural ambassador.

A spokesperson said, “Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell has been announced as a finalist for the International Creative of the Year Award at the KLAT Awards, recognizing her global impact as a visual storyteller and cultural ambassador. Last month she also won the Tim May Memorial Women in Art Prize in London for her painting ‘Why We need Audacity’.

“Hassell’s art, exhibited across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean, Drawing upon mixed media techniques, Hassell intricately weaves layers of history and the complexities of Bermudian and Caribbean heritage into her works, which span painting, fashion, and collage.”

“I’m creating art that is healing,” says Ms Hassell. “I want to open conversations about identity, belonging, and possibility.”

A proud daughter of Bermuda, Hassell credits the island with shaping her rhythm, storytelling, and sense of community.

“Bermuda gave me storytelling,” she reflects. “China gave me discipline and philosophy. That combination, an island soul with a global vision, is very potent.”

The spokesperson said, “Her groundbreaking exhibition I am Because you are in 2021 explored Bermuda’s archival histories of enslavement, reimagining the lives of 350 ancestors to honor their stories.”

“It was a turning point,” she says. “The act of reconstructing fragmented narratives taught me that healing happens through reimagining. We are descendants of creativity and strength.”

The spokesperson said, “Now based in Manchester, Hassell continues to represent Bermuda’s artistic excellence on the world stage, blending art, and wellness to create immersive spaces for reflection and joy. She explores the connection between art and wellbeing on her podcast Art affects. She is also currently a fellow of the Arts in Medicine program, deepening her research between the power of art for community transformation.”

“I hope my work reminds people of who they are and who they can become,” she says. “It’s about connecting to something larger, our shared story of resilience and possibility.”
