‘The War Of The Newts’ Puppet Show At BNL
On October 26, The Bermuda National Library will host the premier of The War of the Newts, a puppet show for families by Bermudian artist Alexander Winfield as part of their Halloween celebrations.
Show Summary:
A spokesperson said, “Sometime in the future, a grouchy sea-captain discovers a new species of newt living on an isolated island. The newts are the size of children, they can use tools and, eventually, they learn to talk. The captain, sensing opportunity, immediately sells his discovery to Bondy industries, a powerful conglomerate. Soon the newts are the latest sensation, sold to every nation to be used as free labor in everything from nail salons to military deployment. The newts quickly change the face of human society…but how do the newts feel about all this? What is Andrew, the Chief Newt, planning for the future of his people…and for the humans that so casually and cruelly stole their destiny?
“The War of the Newts is an adaptation of a celebrated novel by the Czech writer Karel Čapek. Originally published in the 30s, shortly before the catastrophic invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis, it is a cautionary tale warning of the dangers of rampant exploitation, the rise of extremism and the horrors that result from treating living beings as objects.
About the Artist:
“The show is a work in progress by Alex Winfield, who has for many years brought his particular brand of puppetry to his Bermuda home. This includes the puppet opera The Other Side that toured Bermuda schools in 2014, several shows presented at the Chewstick lounge, and his giant puppets that featured in the Bermuda Day parades of 2019 and 2024. He is excited to present The War of the Newts at the National Library, and is grateful for the aide of the Bermuda Arts Council, without whose support the show would not have been possible.
