Illuminating Excellence in Surgical Care

Perioperative Services represent the entire continuum of care that patients receive from the time they are evaluated for surgery until full recovery. This journey includes the preoperative [before surgery], intraoperative [during surgery], and postoperative [after surgery] phases — each one vital to patient safety and successful outcomes.

At Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB], this care is carried out by a diverse and skilled team that includes surgeons, anesthetists, perioperative nurses, sterile processing staff, administrative personnel, and ancillary support teams. Each member contributes their unique expertise to ensure that every patient’s surgical experience is seamless, compassionate, and safe.

Lighting the Path Forward

The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses’ theme, “Light the Path,” celebrates the nurses and surgical professionals who bring clarity, safety, and hope to every procedure. Perioperative nurses are the steady light guiding patients through what can often be an overwhelming experience. Their calm presence, critical thinking, and technical precision illuminate the way — not just for patients, but for the entire surgical team.

Here at BHB, our perioperative services embody a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach that reflects this year’s theme. Together, we light the path for one another — fostering teamwork, mentorship, and innovation in the face of constant change.

The Role and Reach of Perioperative Nursing

Perioperative nurses are at the core of surgical excellence, providing hands-on care, coordination, and clinical judgment throughout the surgical pathway. Their responsibilities extend far beyond the operating room — encompassing patient assessment, preparation, instrumentation management, and post-anesthesia recovery support.

At BHB, our perioperative nurses work across a wide range of specialties, including orthopaedics [joint replacements and trauma repair], general surgery [abdominal, colorectal, and laparoscopic procedures], obstetrics and gynecology [cesarean sections and reproductive surgeries], otolaryngology [ENT and airway management], urology [urinary and reproductive system procedures], plastic and reconstructive surgery [wound care and restorative procedures], and vascular and endoscopy support [minimally invasive and diagnostic procedures].

Each nurse serves as both an advocate for patient safety and a guardian of sterile technique. Whether circulating, scrubbing, or supporting anesthesia, perioperative nurses are the steady hands and calm voices that light the path for patients and peers alike.

“Perioperative nursing is the light that guides precision, compassion, and courage through every procedure.” — Perioperative Services, BHB

Shining Through Teamwork and Innovation

Our perioperative nurses exemplify collaboration and dedication. Even amid evolving surgical demands, they continue to adapt, support one another, and uphold the highest standards of care.

You can see their light in action every day — from the early morning briefings to the final surgical counts — each movement deliberate, each word purposeful, each act centered around the patient. Their strength and unity reflect the heart of perioperative excellence.

“Excellence in surgery is not only about precision — it’s about the light of compassion that guides every hand and every heart.” — Perioperative Services, BHB

Gratitude and Recognition

This year, as we celebrate under the banner of “Light the Path,” we honor the brilliance, dedication, and integrity of every perioperative professional who ensures that each patient journey is one of trust, safety, and healing.

On behalf of the Clinical Director and Leadership Team within Perioperative Services, we extend heartfelt gratitude to every member of our perioperative family for continuing to illuminate the way forward — for one another, for our patients, and for the community we serve.

Together, we light the path.
