Over 100 students took part in the 2025 Cardboard Boat Challenge — which is organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects [IBA] and aims to encourage students to consider careers in architecture and engineering — with CedarBridge Academy winning the event.
A spokesperson said, “Team ‘Mermaids’ of CedarBridge Academy beat out 26 other teams from nine high schools to win the Cardboard Boat Challenge held Friday afternoon at the Bermuda National Aquatics Centre. 113 students participated in the event.
“Teams of no more than five students had two hours to build a boat using only the supplied cardboard boxes, duct tape, and a box cutters, which could float two people the 50-meter length of the National Aquatics Centre Pool.
“The Challenge, organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects [IBA] aims to encourage students to consider careers in architecture and engineering, and connect students and their teachers with local professionals.
“‘Mermaids’ of CedarBridge Academy, comprised of Genesis Payne, Armani DeRosa, Zeni Hansey, and Nicholas Corriera, were the fastest team to complete a 50-metre lap of the pool in a time of 1minute,13 seconds. They held off the Hefferson & Khan Home School team, ‘Team 1,’ comprising Cole Hefferman and Hasan Khan, who finished in 1 minute and 16 seconds.
“In third place was CedarBridge Academy team ‘CBA Islanders’, Eshe Holdipp-Lynch, Naomi Harvey, Joshua Reyes, and Alaya Lovell, who finished in 1 minute, 16:20 seconds.”
Tika Gilbert, Architect & President of the Institute of Bermuda Architects and the organiser of the event, says: “After a one-year break, it was great to see the students take on this challenge again. It is not easy and takes careful planning and good fabrication to cover the distance, but, more than anything, it is good fun.
“It is also a great opportunity for students and teachers to become aware of a community of professionals they can reach out to for advice, work-study opportunities, and future internships. We had a record number of entrants, which is a positive sign that a growing number of young people are interested in and will now have experience with hands-on problem-solving. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to the teaching staff who support the students who came out to participate.”
