Students Learn Meaning Of Remembrance Day

Bugle calls and foot drill practice are helping to engage children across the island as young people deepen their understanding of the significance of Remembrance Day during school visits by the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

A spokesperson said, “A team of soldiers and officers has been delivering presentations to pupils over the past two weeks in the lead-up to November 11.

“Having built on the success of an initial series of visits to public primary schools last year, the 2025 schedule also includes some private schools.

“The presentations by Lieutenant LeeAnn Tucker and Corporal Joliza Vanderpool allow children to learn more about the roles of Bermuda and Bermudians in the world wars, the origins of poppywearing and the history of the Regiment.

“Thanks to contributions from representatives of the RBR’s Band and Corps of Drums, led by Captain Sheldon Fox, pupils hear about the importance of musical instruments within military units and are treated to samples of pieces played around the barracks and beyond.

“Children are encouraged to participate throughout, with a highlight being when they are invited to march.

“Lt Tucker said that the visits offer opportunities for young pupils to feel more connected to Remembrance Day observances.”

“We do this so that the children can be aware of what Remembrance Day is all about,” she said.

“Some children go home and talk about it with their parents and then find out that they had relatives from earlier generations who were in the war, so it helps them become more familiar with their own heritage.”

A spokesperson added, “It is hoped that the RBR’s attendance at schools will continue to generate interest in the Remembrance Day parade, on November 11.”

Lt Tucker added: “Sometimes we lose sight of what it is to show up as a community, but I would like to see more of that. It’s good to unite and remember why history is important.

“The majority of Bermudians are linked in some way to these historic events, through members of their families, so it’s great to come together as a community and give thanks.”

A spokesperson added, “Among the schools visited was Port Royal Primary School, in Southampton, where O’Shandah Lightbourne, a P6 classroom teacher, noted that the presentation linked to topics already being studied by pupils.

“She said that the RBR’s visit provided the students with additional information, including a greater understanding of why poppies are worn in remembrance.”

Ms. Lightbourne added: “On a scale of one to ten, I give it a ten. It was very engaging, not just talking, talking, talking. The children understand more once they are participating and they were able to demonstrate their knowledge as well.”

“Residents are encouraged to turn out on Front Street for Remembrance Day observances – including a parade that will feature the RBR and its band among other organisations – on Tuesday, November 11. Attendees are asked to be in place for 10.30am.”
