HRC Highlights Need For Inclusive Societies

The Human Rights Commission marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by emphasizing the importance of inclusion.

A spokesperson said, “Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Human Rights Commission joins the global call to build societies where inclusion is essential for social progress. This year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, reminds us that advancing equality and justice requires the full participation and leadership of persons with disabilities.

“In Bermuda, the voices and lived experiences of persons with disabilities must remain at the center of decision-making. The Commission encourages individuals with disabilities to amplify their stories because these narratives shape understanding, challenge stereotypes, and drive systemic change.

“The Human Rights Commission urges our community to read the Commission’s Disability Inclusion Report and undertake the community-driven recommendations. The report reflects the voices of residents and identifies urgent priorities, including:

  • Representation: “Nothing About Us Without Us”
  • Accessibility: Removing physical, digital, and societal barriers
  • Legislation and Enforcement: Turning rights into reality
  • Education and Awareness: Building empathy and accountability
  • A National Disability Strategy: A clear roadmap for inclusion led by the Government of Bermuda.

“Disability inclusion is a moral imperative. The Commission calls on government, businesses, and civil society to demonstrate action by implementing these recommendations, investing in accessibility, and ensuring that every person in Bermuda can participate fully, freely, and with dignity.

“Together, let us foster a society where everyone belongs, and where progress is measured by how we include every member of our society.

With a headline like that (HRC Highlights Need For Inclusive Societies) I can think of a couple dozen or more MPs that should receive training.
