Results: Bermuda Breeze Championships
Play has continued in the USTA Bermuda Breeze Tennis Championships at Coral Beach & Tennis Club.
The championships run until Sunday [December 14], marking their tenth year of play in Bermuda.
The event has grown into a fixture of the island’s tennis calendar, attracting overseas competitors and giving local players the chance to earn international ranking points at home.
Recognised as both a USTA Level 2 and ITF 700 Masters tournament, the Bermuda Breeze brings together men and women of all ages for a week of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches on the Club’s Har-Tru clay courts.
This year’s schedule features 36 events across multiple age brackets and format.
In the men’s over-60 singles’ quarter-finals yesterday, Michael Kaplan beat Tim Marshall 6-1, 6-1 and Michael Archibald defeated John Johnson 6-1, 6-0.
Bob Thomas beat Timothy Petty in the men’s over-65 singles’ quarter-finals 6-0, 6-3, John Stanley Bailey defeated beat Meade Palmer 6-0, 6-0 and Mark Perry triumphed over Chris Stevens 6-1, 6-0.
In round two of the men’s over-70 singles, Kaplan beat David Pessin 7-6 [2-1] retired injured.
Robert Graham defeated Wilfred Gonsalves 6-1, 3-0 retired injured.
In the men’s over-75 singles semi-finals, Michael Beautyman beat Marshall Hubsher 6-0, 6-1, Doug MacCurdy defeat Jim Bright 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Dale Zinn triumphed over Leslie Crane 6-3, 6-0.
In round 16 of the men’s open singles, Marc Benkemoun beat Micah Lambert 6-0, 6-0.
Christopher Canada defeated John Johnston in men’s over-55 singles by w/o, and Michael Stern beat Christopher Grasso 6-2, 6-1.
In Monday’s matches, in round one of the men’s over- 70s singles, Kaplan beat Gonzales 6-7 [7], 6-4, 7-6 [8] and Graham defeated Pessin 6-0, 2-0 [retired injured].
Meanwhile, in the men’s over-75 singles quarter-finals, Beautymen beat Keith Chiappa 6-0, 6-0, Hubsher defeated James Watlington 6-0, 6-1, Jim Bright beat Zinn 6-0, 6-0 and MacCurdy beat Crane 6-1, 6-1.
